Chapter 130

Seraphina’s POV

“Anyway, did you need something?” I asked, changing the subject.

Trista sighed, handing me the black coffee. “Nothing. I saw him drop you off and I just… I didn’t trust it. But if you’ve made up your mind, I’m behind you.” /

As she reached the door, I called out to her. “Trista, not a word of this to my parents. They’re at a critical point in their research. I don’t want them distracted.”

Trista hesitated for two seconds, then gave a reluctant nod. “Fine.”

“But-” She gripped the door handle, looking back with an unreadable expression. “You’re not going to tell them about the divorce either?”

I smiled, and in the morning light, it felt sharp and clear. “When the contract finally burns to the ground, they’ll smell the freedom soon enough. No need to stress them out before then.”

Trista let out a long breath. “As long as you know what you’re doing. In this city, shaking off a persistent Alpha is a hell of a lot harder than people think.”

“What about you and Wilmot?” I asked softly, pushing the cooling coffee aside. “Did he finally agree to sign?”

Trista shrugged, a reckless, jagged smile touching her lips, though her eyes were hard. “He’s refusing to sign the Council papers. I’ve already filed for a forced arbitration. It’s going to a hearing soon.”

Dissolving a bond through the Council was a bloodbath-Trista knew it, and so did I.

According to the ancient pack laws, if Mortimer refused to let go, that mating bond would stay latched to my soul like a parasite.

Even if we lived worlds apart, we’d still feel each other’s presence forever.

The only way out without a public execution of a trial was to play nice for the next thirty days and get him to agree to a mutual rejection ceremony.

“Good luck,” I said, genuinely smiling at her. “I hope you find your freedom again.”

Trista smiled back, a tragic kind of hope in her eyes. “You too, Sera.”

I didn’t have any surgeries scheduled, so I spent the afternoon clearing the backlog of patients.

By the time I saw the last person, the sunset was bleeding red across the glass of the surgical wing.

I changed into my street clothes and drove back to my tiny, warm apartment. Dash was already waiting behind the door.

“I’ve got a thing tonight. Trista is coming over later with treats for you,” I murmured, prepping his food and scratching him behind the ears. “Be a good boy until I get back, okay?”

Dash tilted his head, his golden eyes full of devotion. He licked my palm, sensing my apology.

Then, my phone screamed.

Mortimer’s name flashed on the screen, looking like a neon warning sign in the dim room.

“Give me five minutes, I’m coming out,” I said into the phone. Then, I instinctively covered the mic with my hand and dropped into a voice I had never-not once-used with Mortimer. Soft, warm, and utterly tender. “Stay here and wait for me, okay? I’ll be back soon, baby.”

I hung up, threw on my shoes, and headed for the door.

I picked up the phone again, my voice shifting back into that flat, clitical drone. “Sorry. I wasn’t at the clinic. Give me a few minutes to get to the curb.”

“Fine,” Mortimer growled, his voice alow vibration.

He hung up on me.

Third Person’s POV

“Stay here and wait for me… I’ll be back soon, baby.”

The words were looping in Mortimer’s brain like a nightmare.

The intimacy in her voice-the softness, the playful affection-it was something he hadn’t heard in three years of mating, not

even in their most private moments.

Comparing that to the way she spoke to him-like she was reading him a legal summons-made the wolf in his head want to tear the world apart.

Inside his mind, Barton was letting out a violent, wounded roar. His pine-scented pheromones were slamming against the windows of the car, thick with a possessive, lethal energy.

“So that’s how it is?” he thought. He was taking her to a family dinner, and she was already planning her escape back to that ” trash” she was hiding at home.

Did that “mutt” have no shame?

If he wanted to steal an Alpha’s mate, he should at least have the balls to show his face.
