Chapter 147
Third Person’s POV
After screaming her lungs out, Seraphina didn’t grant Mortimer another look.
She took a deep breath, lowering her head again to force herself to calmly scroll through the missing pet updates on T*****r.
Right then, in a quiet corner of the dark street, a tiny, incredibly faint whimper echoed.
Seraphina’s fingers completely froze over her phone screen.
She whipped her head up, her ears twitching as she tracked the incredibly quiet sound.
But looking around, there was nothing but the howling cold wind.
The sound had been too short-so short that Seraphina started wondering if her high anxiety was making her hallucinate.
But even if it was a false hope, she had to chase it.
Seraphina took a deep breath, calling out toward the pitch-black bushes.
“Dash? Dash, are you in there? Can you make a sound for me, please?”
This time, there were two distinct, rapid responses!
The dull, hopeless look in Seraphina’s eyes instantly turned into pure, ecstatic shock.
She heard it!
That was absolutely Dash’s voice!
She whipped around to face Trista, sounding completely frantic with excitement, tears still wet on her face. “Trista! Did you hear that?! That’s Dash! It has to be him!”
As she talked, Seraphina desperately shouted toward that corner over and over.
But weirdly, after that one response, the alley went dead silent again.
Trista was standing a bit further away and hadn’t caught anything over the wind.
Watching Seraphina look like she was losing her mind and on the verge of crying from joy, Trista’s heart ached. She assumed her friend was just completely burned out and hearing things.
“Sera, calm down. Don’t do this to yourself,” Trista said, taking her arm, completely heartbroken.
They had already checked this remote corner a million times.
It was a straight, narrow dead-end alley with zero debris or clutter. You could see the whole thing at a glance; there was no way Dash could be hiding here.
But this time, Seraphina was sharper than ever.
“I heard him, Trista. I really did.”
She grabbed Trista’s hands back, white-knuckling her fingers. “He’s right here! I’m completely sane, it wasn’t a hallucination!”
Without a second thought, she threw herself back toward the source of the noise, calling out with pure obsession. “Dash? You can hear me, right? Dash!”
Watching Seraphina look this hysterical and frantic, Mortimer, who was still standing in the freezing cold, finally felt his brain connect a few weird dots. Something about her reaction felt completely off.

But the pure despair on her face was too loud, leaving him zero time to think it through.
“Woo… woo…”
Two more incredibly faint, yet very real whimpers came out.
This time, it wasn’t just Seraphina.
Even Mortimer, with his elite wolf senses, heard it perfectly clear.
“Woo–”
The sound was tiny, like a dying newborn animal.
But right now, the little guy seemed to feel his owner’s presence, using every last bit of his strength to reply in the dark.
“It’s down here!”
Mortimer reacted even faster than Seraphina.
Using his explosive wolf speed, he took a few giant strides and slammed his boots down right next to a heavy storm drain cover.
The metal grate was shut tight against the concrete.
No wonder!
No wonder they had spent half the night looking around and never thought that Dash could be trapped inside a closed storm drain.
Seraphina didn’t even care how Dash got stuck down there.
Her eyes red, she threw her entire body down by the edge of the grate.
Mortimer ripped the heavy cast-iron cover off with one hand, slamming it onto the concrete with a deafening screech.
The sharp beam of her flashlight instantly cut through the pitch-black sewer.
The second Seraphina saw what was inside, her breathing completely stopped.
It was a soaking wet, tiny golden retriever puppy.
The little guy was barely the size of a hand, helplessly wedged beneath the rusty rungs of the metal ladder.
His beautiful, clean golden coat was completely drenched in filthy water, his body twisted in a painful popition. His round black eyes were wide with pure panic and despair.
