Chapter 155

Third Person’s POV

Trista gave him a sidelong glance, instantly seeing right through his pathetic attempt to close the distance.

She dropped a freezing rejection. “Not happening.”

She saw exactly how shameless Mortimer was being tonight, too.

No wonder the man had a death grip on that stray puppy the second he stepped out of the car.

He knew damn well that the moment Dash left his arms, he’d lose his only valid excuse to loiter in Seraphina’s apartment.

Mortimer walked straight over to the couch and sat down with the puppy.

Dash seemed to have woken up. His big, round eyes were locked unblinkingly onto Mortimer, looking unbelievably docile.

Seraphina squatted in front of them, wringing out a warm towel to carefully wipe the grime off Dash’s fur.

Naturally, she noticed the dependent, affectionate look the puppy was giving Mortimer.

For some reason, an absolutely unhinged, absurd scenario flashed into her brain without warning-

Dash gazing deeply into Mortimer’s eyes, whispering, “My biggest regret in this life is that I can’t be your mate and bear your

heir.”

What the hell.

Seraphina mentally slapped herself, convinced she was actually losing her mind.

She must have been scrolling through way too much TikTok brainrot lately to have a thought that aggressively weird.

Right now, the living room presented a strangely domestic yet intensely awkward tableau, leaving the two spectators standing by the door completely speechless.

From Wilmot’s POV, the usually ruthless, cold-blooded High Alpha was currently cradling a puppy like it was a fragile newborn baby.

The sharp, murderous eyes that usually tore enemies to shreds were sickeningly gentle right now.

“Babe, look at that,” Wilmot muttered, unable to hold back his commentary. “If he hadn’t lost his goddamn mind and tangled himself up in that messy drama with Vivian, he’d probably be holding his actual flesh-and-blood son in those strong arms right

now.”

To this day, he still couldn’t comprehend his best friend’s self-destructive relationship choices.

Trista shot him a flat look. Her tone dripped with unfiltered sarcasm.

“Maybe in your little elite Alpha circle, sticking to one single mate for life feels like a raw deal, huh? You guys should really invent a time machine and go back to the ancient era where Pack leaders could legally collect multiple breeders. It’d suit you perfectly.”

“Damn it, what do you mean ‘our circle’?”

Wilmot panicked, dropping his voice to desperately defend himself. “I swear to the Moon Goddess, I will only be loyal to you in this life! Do not lump me in with an idiot like Mortimer!”

“Well, thank you so much for the bare minimum,” Trista sneered.

Even though they kept their voices to a whisper, Mortimer and Seraphina’s heightened wolf hearing caught every single word.

Mortimer looked down at the well-behaved puppy in his arms, feelitig like his chest had just been smashed with a sledgehammer.

He couldn’t stop the thought from spiraling: If he had just fully committed to the mating ceremony with Seraphina back then… if he had never drawn up that goddamn contract… would he be holding their shared her right now?

A crushing, suffocating wave of regret instantly swallowed him whole.

He snapped his head up, his dark eyes burning as he looked at Seraphina.

But she was just calmly wiping the last of the dirt off Dash.

Seraphina kept her eyelashes lowered, ruthlessly burying any stray emotions.

She had heard the couple’s whispering, obviously.

If this had happened a few months ago, maybe a pathetic, foolish spark of hope would have ignited in her chest, and she would have carefully tested his reaction.

But looking back now, that so-called unforgettable, stubborn obsession she once had was nothing but a joke. The exact second she decided to let go, all of it had turned to ash.
