Chapter 170

Third Person’s POV

Because she had promised Mortimer she would attend the corporate team-building retreat, Seraphina didn’t sleep in.

Just as she finished packing Dash’s medications and daily essentials, her phone chimed with a message, “Are you awake?”

It was Mortimer.

She replied, “I’m up.”

“I’m coming over now. I brought you breakfast.”

“Thanks.”

The exact second she hit send, her doorbell rang.

Seraphina threw a glance toward the entryway-who would be visiting this early in the morning?

Even though some of her colleagues lived in the same apartment complex, they didn’t visit each other frequently, let alone show up bright and early on a weekend.

She walked over to the door and checked the intercom screen.

“Mortimer?” she murmured in surprise.

Didn’t he just text that he was “coming over now”?

It had been less than a minute. How was he already standing right outside her door?

She pulled the door open.

“Morning.” Mortimer stood out in the hall, the corners of his lips curved upward into a faint smile. Ever since he had started lowering his proud head, his usually freezing, ice-cold face seemed to have completely thawed out. He was smiling significantly

more than before.

Seraphina was once again absolutely certain: the stability of the Craig Corporation was his ultimate lifeline. For the sake of corporate PR, he was actually willing to lower his Alpha pride to the absolute floor.

“My father had the staff bake some fresh oat pies and brew some coffee back at the main estate. I grabbed some on my way here. Try it.”

He handed over a premium insulated lunchbox, deliberately name-dropping his “father.”

It was food prepared by elders; naturally, she wouldn’t refuse it.

Sure enough, Seraphina took it and gave a polite, routine “thank you.”

But the second she popped open the lid, she froze.

The rich, buttery scent of fresh baking flooded her senses, and the coffee cup was still scalding hot to the touch. It was obviously straight out of the oven.

Just a second ago, she had assumed Mortimer had been waiting out in the hallway for a while-but this food was clearly fresh.

Even if he perfectly timed the commute, there was absolutely no way he could have driven across half the city from the pack estate and delivered it while it was still this hot.

Furthermore, the elevators in this building required a security fob to access specific floors. How exactly did he get up here?

When he brought Dash back yesterday, he had gotten upstairs a step faster than she did. The day before that, George had driven

the Bentley straight into the complex completely unimpeded. And yesterday morning, when he came to pick Dash up…

A string slowly pulled tight in Seraphina’s chest. All the tiny details she had been brushing off finally floated to the surface.

Had he already used his wealth and power to completely compromise the building’s security system?

Back when she was waiting at the gate for George, she had literally seen the driver pull his car out from inside the residential complex with her own eyes.

This glaring inconsistency suddenly exploded in her mind

Seraphina looked up at Mortimer, who was currently playing with Dash, and asked bluntly, “The elevator requires a key fob to access this floor. How exactly did you get up here?”

Mortimer’s fingers stopped dead right on the tip of Dash’s ear. He froze for a split second.

Looking slightly uncomfortable, he rubbed the tip of his nose. He averted his gaze, his tone laced with a highly uncharacteristic trace of guilt. “Yesterday morning, I bought the apartment directly across the hall from yours.”

“Across the hall?” Seraphina blinked, genuinely taken aback. “Wasn’t that unit already occupied?”

Just the night before last, when she came back to look for Dash, she had literally run into the family living there in the elevator.

How was it possible that the title was transferred to Mortimer by yesterday morning?

Besides, at that specific time of day, the property registry offices weren’t even open yet!

Her first instinct was that Mortimer was playing her, but the hard proof was standing right in front of her he really had just swaggered out of the unit across the hall.

As if reading her skepticism, Mortimer volunteered the rest of the story. “I offered them ten times the market price. They packed up and moved out overnight.”

Seraphina was speechless.

Ten times. Overnight. Moved out.

Faced with absolute wealth and power, the resistance of ordinary people was truly pathetically fragile.

While Oriental Elegance was considered a mid-to-high-end complex, it was worlds apart from the luxurious Blade estate.

And it was completely in the opposite direction of the Craig Corporation headquarters. What exactly was his angle for buying a place here?

Several theories spun through Seraphina’s mind, but ultimately, she didn’t ask any more questions. She just nodded.

Ironically, Mortimer acted exactly like a thief suffering from a guilty conscience. Since she didn’t ask, he actually volunteered an explanation himself, “I like the vibe here. Moving over here is pretty nice.”

He shot her a rapid, cautious glance. Seeing her stay silent, he tacked on another excuse, “It’s also way more convenient for picking up Dash. I don’t have to wake up as early.”

Seraphina didn’t respond. Inwardly, she scoffed, “Sure, you don’t have to wake up early to pick up the dog, but your commute to the Craig Corporation just more than doubled.”

Not to mention, compared to his exclusive Alpha mansion, this apartment was pathetically cramped.
