Chapter 245

Third Person’s POV

Seraphina frowned, genuine confusion in her eyes. “Is there really anything left for us to talk about?”

She wasn’t playing hard to get. She honestly couldn’t fathom what else they had to discuss besides the formal termination of their marriage and severing the bond.

Mortimer’s jaw tightened. He cast a venomous, defensive glare at Caldwell. By all laws of nature and the pack, he was her destined Alpha. Yet tonight, another man stood in his place.

“Sir,” Mortimer said, his voice dropping an octave as he looked at Caldwell. “Would you mind giving us a moment? I need to speak with my wife. Alone.”

Caldwell’s sharp brow arched at the title. A mocking smirk played on his lips. “Alpha Mortimer, just call me Caldwell. There’s no need to use such a formal title with me. I’m not your senior, after all.”

Mortimer’s eyes flashed dangerously dark. “You are Toasty’s senior, which makes you mine. She and I are destined mates. We are one.”

It was a pathetic, last-ditch effort-a he-wolf desperately baring his teeth to declare ownership over his mate.

Caldwell took a half-step forward, seamlessly shifting his broad frame to shield Seraphina from Mortimer’s predatory gaze.

His smile remained placid, but his words cut like a silver blade. “In a few days, when that legal paperwork is voided, you won’t be ‘one’ anymore. Don’t you remember, Alpha Mortimer?”

The line popped Mortimer’s fragile composure like a needle to a balloon.

“What?” Mortimer’s voice turned dangerously cold, a low growl vibrating in his chest. “Are you praying for my bond with Toasty to end?”

Caldwell shrugged, entirely unfazed by the threat of an Alpha’s wrath. “I am simply stating a fact. No need to get your blood pressure up, Alpha.”

A deadly chill settled in Mortimer’s eyes as he stared at Caldwell’s smiling face. His jaw was locked tight..

His voice dropped another octave, lethal and quiet. “Even if she and I are parting ways, until the final second ticks down, she is legally mine. If you have designs on my wife, I suggest you remember your place.”

The slight curve of Caldwell’s lips flattened.

The air grew heavy with the scent of ozone and impending violence. Seraphina’s brow furrowed when she sensed the danger.

She didn’t want Caldwell catching heat from Mortimer because of her. Pulling him firmly behind her back, she looked up, squaring her shoulders against Mortimer. “You love projecting your own miserable nature onto everyone else, don’t you?”

Mortimer watched her shield the other man, the last light in his eyes dying out.

“Don’t you dare talk about my senior and me that way!” she snapped.

Behind her, Caldwell looked at her. His lips twitched into a suppressed smile. Honestly, he thought, “Mortimer isn’t entirely wrong about my intentions.”

But Mortimer only heard one thing loud and clear: Seraphina had naturally grouped herself and Caldwell together while he-the legal husband-was cast out as an enemy.

A profound, aching sorrow filled his gaze. “Are you protecting him now?”

Seraphina shot him a strange look. Mortimer used to be a man of few words, yet now, he couldn’t seem to stop making these

petty, unnecessary remarks.

Still, she knew the harsh reality-Caldwell had no real connections here in Los Angeles. If Mortimer wanted to crush him, it

would be effortless.

She refused to let her baggage drag Caldwell down.

Before Mortimer could snap, she quickly added, “Caldwell isn’t just my senior. He’s the reason I’m breathing. When I was in Alaska, if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have survived those two weeks alone.”

The statement utterly obliterated Mortimer’s defenses. It brought him face-to-face with the one sin he could never atone for.

“You should understand the concept of repaying a life-debt better than anyone, Alphà Mortimer,” Seraphina said, her voice entirely level, devoid of petty sarcasm. “So surely you understand why I feel compelled to protect him?”

But to Mortimer, the words were a lethal dose of irony. She was throwing his own past excuses right back into his face, and he didn’t have a single leg to stand on.

“Since you are so fond of reminding me that we are currently husband and wife, shouldn’t a married couple share the same debts?” Seraphina challenged, tilting her head. “As my legal mate, you should be just as eager to swallow your pride and repay my savior. Don’t you think, Alpha Mortimer?” 2

Mortimer’s face turned paper-white. His lips parted, trembling, but his throat locked up.

A horrifying intrusive thought pierced his mind-if Caldwell hadn’t been there in Alaska to nurse her back to health for those two weeks, she would be a corpse.

The sheer weight of that crushing guilt suffocated him, stealing the air from his lungs.
