Ex-Mate Wants Me Back (Seraphina and Mortimer) novel Chapter 41

Chapter 41

Seraphina’s POV

I scrubbed my hands over my face, watching the rain streak down the taxi window.

I muttered under my breath, “Mortimer, you have to actually earn the right to be jealous.”

In this relationship, I was just an intruder who didn’t know her place. This was simply the inevitable crash of a one-sided delusion.

Signing that contract back then was me placing a gamble on a ten-year crush. Since I lost the bet, I just had to take the Land walk away.

The rain was coming down in sheets now, the wind hurling water violently against the cab windows.

“To the Pet Clinic, please.”

By the time I got to the clinic, Dr. Smith had just finished giving Dash his shots.

The puppy was lying in the observation cage, his eyes half-closed, looking incredibly weak and pathetic.

“Dash is responding beautifully to the treatment. His healing capabilities are strong. He should be ready to be discharged in a few days.” Hearing the doctor say that finally let the tight knot in my chest unravel.

“Dash” was the name I had given him.

Standing by his cage, I reached through the bars to gently stroke his fuzzy head, whispering, “Be a good boy, Dash. Once you’re better, I’m taking you home.”

It was like he understood me. He let out a few tiny whimpers, already sounding so much stronger than when I first picked him

That tiny little response of life actually made my entire heart melt

I stayed with him at the clinic for over an hour. It wasn’t until the rain outside had completely blurred the city skyline that I finally left.

It was past ten o’clock by the time I made it back to the Blades’ Alpha estate.

I pushed the front door open and immediately froze. The living room lights were blindingly bright.

“You’re back?” Mortimer’s deep voice rolled from the couch.

He was already sitting there, changed into a light grey loungewear set.

“Did you sense him on the territory when we crossed the border?” I asked my wolf in my head.

Lily answered with total indifference, “Yeah, but… I just didn’t care.”

Seeing me stand there silently, Mortimer broke the ice. “What? Surprised to see me home?”

I snapped out of it, kicking off my shoes to swap into my slippers. I asked casually, “Shouldn’t you be keeping Miss Davis company right now?”

I walked straight in.

The rain outside was still pounding, with intermittent rumbles of thunder shaking the windows.

I genuinely thought he would stay at the Davis’ mansion to keep Vivian company-the thunder was so loud out there, was he really okay leaving her all alone?

Out of the corner of my eye, I could feel his face instantly darken, his aura fluctuating wildly.

But I didn’t give him a second glance, walking straight toward the guest bedroom

Ever since we started sleeping in separate rooms, I’d slowly moved all my stuff in there

Just as I pushed the guest room door open, Mortimer’s icy voice hit my back. “Seraphina.”

I stopped and turned around, realizing he had followed right behind me.

His dark eyes were locked onto me, his pupils flashing with a volatile, restless agitation.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, letting go of the doorknob, genuinely confused.

Mortimer stared at me heavily, looking like he was struggling to force the words out.

A second later, he pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration and snapped defensively, “In your mind, am I really that lacking in boundaries? Do you actually think I’d spend the night with another she-wolf?”

“Huh?” I looked at him in total shock.

How many times had he ditched me for Vivian?

I had tasted the agony of being abandoned by my mate countless times already.

Why was he acting like he was the victim of some massive injustice right now?

My confusion and sense of absurdity were one hundred percent genuine.

Mortimer stared at me, his face getting colder by the second.

I switched back to my usual, flat tone and threw out a casual excuse, “The rain was just so heavy out there, I figured you wouldn’t come back.”

Seeing him press his lips into a tight line, I quickly added, “If there’s nothing else, I’m going to go change.”

After I showered and changed into fresh clothes, I walked out to find Mortimer still sitting in the living room.

The second he saw me, he stood right up and walked over. “Vivian passed out. Her mother begged me to come over. I just watched her take her meds and came straight back.”

I was genuinely surprised. Mortimer never synchronized his schedule with me, let alone explained his actions.

But I just nodded. “Yeah. I understand.”

Right as I reached for the guest room door again, his hand shot out and clamped down on my wrist.
