Chapter 66
Seraphina’s POV
+15 Bonus
As we passed the assistant healer, the Great Mortimer- the man who usually moves like a ghost in public-abruptly cut his pace.
Before I could process the sudden stop, he dropped a bomb on the entire hallway. “I’m Seraphina’s tuate.”
I froze. My brow hit a hard, angry line.
I opened my mouth to shut him down, but a sudden, searing heat flared at the base of my neck.
Mortimer was doing it. Right there in front of everyone, he was pulling on the mating bond-using that fraying, invisible cord to give my soul a sharp, dominant yank.
The air caught in my throat. Every rebuttal I had was suddenly locked behind a wall of biological instinct.
The assistant stood there, her jaw practically hitting the linoleum. “Wait… the other day you said he wasn’t even your boyfriend. You guys mated already?”
She clearly remembered my “we’re just friends” act in the cafeteria.
I couldn’t find the words. I just forced a tight, awkward twitch of a smile and tried to shove Mortimer toward the exit.
But he was in some kind of manic, possessive spiral. He wanted the whole world to see the brand.
“We’ve been mated for three years,” he added, his voice dropping like a heavy iron weight.
The assistant went mute. I watched the color drain from her face as Mortimer’s High Alpha pressure started to fill the hall. Her fake smile stayed frozen. “Wow… Seraphina. You really kept that under wraps. We had no idea.”
“Mortimer,” I hissed, my patience officially dead. “Move. Now.”
I had no idea what kind of nerve he was hitting. Claiming a status that was about to expire was just creating a mess I’d have to
clean up later.
He didn’t say another word, just followed me to the injection suite with a dark, satisfied look on his face.
Behind us, I heard the assistant’s stage-whisper: “My God! That’s the Alpha of the Blade Pack!”
I handed the meds to the duty nurse and gestured to a row of chairs. “Wait for the page. Get your IV.”
“Where are you going?” he snapped, his eyes flashing with a weird, desperate anxiety.
“I need air.” I was barely holding it together. If it weren’t for my medical license and a shred of lingering pity, I would’ve walked out of the building ten minutes ago.
“You’re not staying?” Mortimer sounded genuinely crushed.
“It’s an IV drip, Mortimer. Why do I need to stay?”
He looked at me with those watery, feverish eyes. “Haven’t you heard? People are at their weakest when they’re sick. They need… support.”
I stared at him.
I couldn’t wrap my brain around the word “weak” being applied to a six-foot-three predator who could rip a throat out without breaking a sweat. Even if he did look like death warmed over.
“You’re my mate. It’s your duty to stay with me at the healing center,” he said, pulling his final card. “It’s in the contract.”
He glared at me, terrified I’d bolt the second he looked away.

The “C” word worked. I hesitated.
The contract did say that as a spouse, I had to maintain the appearance of mutual support in public.
For a split second, I wanted to scream at him.
I wanted to ask where that “duty” was when I was buried under six feet of snow. Why didn’t his precious mating bond tell him I was dying then? 1
But the fight was gone. I just didn’t have the energy. “Fine.”
I didn’t look at his face.
When his number hit the screen, I nudged him. “You’re up. Go.”
He went like a good soldier, shuffling over to the nurse’s station.
The nurse took one look at him—at that face that belonged on a movie poster-and forgot how to breathe for a second. Then her eyes lit up. Recognition hit.
She looked at me, a playful smirk dancing on her lips. “Seraphina, you brought him to the ER yourself? And you still want to tell me he’s not your boyfriend?”
