Fake Dating My Ex's Hockey Star Brother (Maya Scott) novel Chapter 109

KATY’S POV

“I hope you’re not in too much pain,” the nurse says.

I shake my head. It’s just a few bruises. My wrist aches like I twisted it but she already told me it isn’t sprained.

“I’ll come back to check on you in a bit.”

“Um… actually.” I stop her, biting my lip. “Could I borrow your phone? I lost-”

“Katy!”

I snap my head toward the door. Braydon stands there, eyes wide and he’s panting like he ran the whole way. He moves fast, crossing the room in seconds but the nurse steps in front of him, one hand raised, and blocking his path.

“Excuse me but who are you?” the nurse asks.

“He’s my boyfriend,” I say quickly and she glances at me. “I was about to borrow your phone to call him.”

She stares at me for a few seconds before nodding and stepping aside. “Be careful with her. She has minor injuries.” She says. “I’ll be back.”

Braydon rushes to my side and sits on the bed, his eyes scanning me like he’s trying to count every bruise.

“What happened, baby? Why are you here?” His voice sounds small, nothing like the hockey player who takes hits for a living. “How bad is it?”

I lift my arms for a hug and he pulls me in carefully, like I might break. We stay like that for a few seconds before I ease back.

“I’m fine,” I tell him. “But I need you not to panic and to go to my room. Now. I was going to call you.”

“Why?” His gaze drops to the cuts on my arm. “How did this happen?”

“Someone jumped me.”

His eyes widen and he stiffens, like the words knocked the air out of him. “What?”

“I was coming back from the library,” I explain. “You know that path that leads up to Social Science. Someone in a mask jumped me. It happened so fast, I didn’t even get a chance to fight back. But from the build… I know it was Bryan.”

Anger crosses his face in seconds. “Someone jumped you?” he repeats. “Are you saying someone did this to you?”

“Braydon, listen.” My voice comes out rushed. “He took my purse. You can’t focus on how I look, you have to go to my room. I think whoever it is is after the pen or something. Allie hid it in her wardrobe, but I don’t think it’s safe there. Dorm security is shit. They let anybody in.”

He just stares at me and I can tell the shock is setting in, like his mind can’t catch up to what I’m saying.

“Braydon,” I snap and he flinches. “Go.”

He staggers to his feet, his hands shaking at his sides and I can’t tell if it’s anger or shock.

“I’ll be back,” he whispers, then stumbles out of the room.

I exhale and sink back against the cold metal of the bed.

I know it was Bryan under that mask. We might be broken up, but I know his smell. I know his build. If he did this, he’s after something…either my phone or what’s in my room.

I just hope Braydon gets there fast enough to stop him.

BRAYDON’S POV

I’ve spent my whole life screwing things up. All the time. I didn’t realize how much my mom was suffering until she was gone. My dad dragged me into a deal that could destroy everything she worked for. I do stupid shit-hurt my friends, the people around me. I make the same goddamn mistakes over and over.

So when I stagger out of the clinic and dial 911, part of me is sure I’m making another one.

I don’t know why it feels wrong. I just know it does. But if I walk into that room and Bryan’s there, it’ll be a bloodbath. I’ll lose it and I’ll kill him. And if he’s not there, I’ll be the asshole who caused a scene on campus for nothing.

Either way, it’s going to blow up.

“911, what’s your emergency?”

The voice cuts through my thoughts. My hands are shaking as I press the phone to my ear and force myself to breathe. “I think someone just broke into my girlfriend’s room,” I say.

“Can you confirm that you’re certain?” the operator asks.

I should say no. I should tell them it’s just a gut feeling.

“Yes,” I respond. “I’m sure.”

I’m already in my car. I start the engine and pull out.

“Your location shows Cadston,” the operator says. “Is that correct?”

“Yes. But you need to send someone to North Hill Dorm. Fourth floor. Room three. Please hurry.”

“Local police are being dispatched to check it out.” The operator replies. “I’ll need you to…”

I end the call.

My grip tightens around the steering wheel. I should have called campus security. I know that. I always know these things after I’ve already made the wrong call.

I barely get the car into the lot before I’m out, running toward the building. I take the elevator to the fourth floor.

My pace slows as I approach her room and my chest tightens because what if no one’s there?

As I stop in front of her room, the door is slightly open.

He’s fucking here.

I switch my phone to voice record and shove it into my pocket.

I burst inside, the door slamming hard against the wall. Katy’s place is wrecked: the drawers pulled out, clothes everywhere, books dumped like someone went looking for something specific.
