FEW DAYS LATER
BRAYDON’S POV
“I swear, if I forget anything, I’m going to lose it,” Katy mutters, pacing her room.
For someone who’s had days to pack, she’s somehow both wildly unprepared and aggressively stressed. There’s a sock on the desk, her charger in one hand, and suitcase still half-open with her clothes pouring out.
I catch her right before she bolts out the door, grab her shoulder and turn her toward me. Hey. Breathe.”
I exaggerate a slow inhale, then let it out, hoping she’ll copy me like she usually does.
She barely does.
“I just feel like I’m forgetting something,” she says.
“Everyone forgets something on a trip.”
She narrows her eyes at me. “That is not helpful.”
Then she shoves me aside and storms out, and I just stand there for a second, rubbing my
face.
If this is a preview of married life, I already know two things: one, she’s terrifying when she’s stressed, and two, I will absolutely be a submissive husband. No question. One look at her marching around like that and I’d hand over the remote, my wallet, and everything on me without a fight.
“What are you even doing here?” She snaps at Justin who’s lounging on the couch.
“To help you two pack,” he says flatly.
“And you’re just… sitting there?” Katy raises an eyebrow. “How exactly is that helping?”
Justin glances at me, and I shake my head subtly, warning him not to bite off more than he can chew.
“I’ll just… stand over there,” he mutters, drifting toward me. Then he nudges my shoulder. “Still got time to change your mind about her, you know.”
“Worry about yourself,” I snap back, before turning to help Katy dig through her chaos to figure out what’s got her so cranky.
KATY’S POV
“I really wish you were coming with us,” I tell Allie, tugging my coat tighter around myself.
She hooks her arm through mine. “I’ll join you guys in three days once I wrap everything up.”
I nod. She has an audition for a small commercial, and she really wants it.
My gaze drifts to Justin leaning against the door and casually eating my leftover peanut butter like he pays rent here. I scan him from head to toe. “And you… you’ve got that scout thing, right?”
He bobs his head.
“Good. Keep Allie safe as much as you can,” I order. “And don’t piss her off. Just do whatever she says.”
He gives me a look like I’ve completely lost my mind, like I’m talking straight out of my ass and goes back to the peanut butter.
Braydon appears at the end of the hallway. “Baby, our bags are already in the car,” he announces.
“I’m coming!” I call back, then pull Allie into a tight hug. “Take care of yourself.”
She nods, rubbing the back of my head. “You too.”
We pull apart and I smirk. “We’re gonna have so much fun this break.”
“I know,” she chuckles.
I step closer and drive my fist lightly into Justin’s stomach as a goodbye. He coughs, shooting me a glare as I turn away like nothing happened.
When I reach Braydon, I loop my arm through his and smile up at him.
