Chapter 57

ALLISON’S POV

“Don’t make a sound,” I hiss at Jessy as he tiptoes into my room. I shut the door behind him, careful not to

make a noise that would wake Katy.

“Alls, what kind of bedsheet is this?” he asks, and I slam my hand over his mouth. His eyes go wide, and he

yanks my hand away, frowning. “What?!” he hisses back, clearly not expecting the assault.

“Your voice is loud,” I whisper, pointing at the wall. “Katy’s sleeping and you might wake her up.”

He rolls his eyes and flops onto my bed. “Come on, she just got back from Chicago. That nap is probably

more important to her than hearing me talk.”

Fair point, but I’m not taking chances. Not after she already grilled me for staying out late and practically

forced me to make up Sunjit. I nearly lost it when I blurted that out, thinking she’d figure it out but nope, she actually bought it. She believes I’m dating some Indian guy. I mean… how does someone with a

perfect GPA also have zero bullshit radar?

“Are you going to sit or what?” Jessy snaps me out of my thoughts, giving me an impatient look. I roll my eyes and plop down beside him, shrugging off my vest.

“Don’t show me your boobs, please. I’m still a man,” he says.

I scoff, fighting back a laugh. “You’re just a man as much as I am.”

He tilts his head. “I have a dick.”

“That

you barely use,” I tease, giving his chin a playful smack. “Tell me, when was the last time you topped

someone?”

He squints, pretending to think, though we both know the answer-he hasn’t, and probably won’t anytime

soon.

“Fuck you, bitch,” he mutters, and I snort.

“Alright, enough clowning around,” I sit up to face him, my legs crossed on the bed. “Let’s get down to business. What did you dig up on this Black guy?”

Jessy pulls his crossbody bag out and sets it in front of me. I reach for it, but he holds it back, shaking his

head.

“Before we do this, remind me again what your guy made you promise,” he says, raising an eyebrow.

I let out a long breath. “You really expect me to just sit back and do nothing?”

Yes, that should be the most logical thing to do, and the look on Jessy’s face says that most people probably would. After all, Justin made me promise a million things last night, all to keep his life under

wraps. But yeah, I have shamefully broken every single one of them.

Here I am with Jessy, about to hunt down this Black guy and fix everything which is straight out of Justin’s “Big Bad Book of Allison Carter Rules.” But hey, I’m not just good for drama and sex. My mom swears have a way with words, so I’m about to put that theory to the test. If it all blows up in my face and fingers crossed, it won’t, I might just pack up and move to a different continent. But for now? Game on.

“You look like you’re having second thoughts,” Jessy says, leaning in a little too close. “It’s not too late to

bail.”

I roll my eyes. “Did you get what I asked?”

He exhales, rubbing the back of his neck. “Yeah… and a lot more.”

I sit up straighter, holding out my hand. Slowly, he digs into his bag and pulls out two things: a taser and a fake gun, handing them over with a shake of his head.

I turn them over in my hand, dropping them on the bed. “Okay… so what did you actually find out about

Black?”

Jessy leans back and smirks. “Well…he’s not really popular in Cadston for sure. Barely even attends

classes.”

My eyes widen. “He’s a student?”

“You didn’t know?” His voice drops. “He’s a senior, too. And the kicker? His dad’s the Admissions officer.”

I slap a hand over my mouth before I can stop myself. “No way… Mr. Wright?”

He nods. “Black fights with his dad all the time and he’s the black sheep of four siblings. And Justin’s story? Totally checks out. My sources say he’s been running his little blackmail operation forever and he’s

ruthless.”

“So basically, there’s a way around him.”

Jessy exhales. “My guy says his weak spot is his dad. He’s not so tough when the man’s around and there are even rumors he gets beaten pretty badly.” He hesitates before continuing. “The old man doesn’t know half of what Black is into. If you threaten to expose him, it might be enough to make him back off. But

without proof?” He shakes his head. “His dad won’t believe some random accusation.”

He’s right.

If I’m going to scare Black into leaving Justin alone, it has to be real. It has to be something solid that I

can present to his Dad or anyone else.

Drama novels have taught me that no matter how cruel or powerful someone is, they always have a fear or a soft spot. All I need to do is get close enough to Black and exploit that fear.

“I really don’t think you should do this, Alls,” Jessy cuts In. “This is a reckless plan and we can’t just walk up to Black with nothing but a taser and fake gun. This is not a movie. What if you mess it up? It’ll only make things worse for Justin. And no offense, but you’re not a guy. You can’t just beat him up or scare him

with a clenched fist.”

“But I can outsmart him.” My gaze drops to the taser and the fake gun on the table. “These are just props, last-resort stuff. I don’t plan to fight him, I plan to play him just the same way he played Justin.”

Jessy studies me for a long moment. “How?”

I smirk, then quickly toss my into a ponytail. “I know one thing guys can’t resist… besides money.”

“You’re not-”

“A sexy woman.” I bite my lip. “Black won’t see it coming. I mean, what are the odds a girl like me tries to blackmail him? All I need to do is draw him out like he did with Justin and get my own evidence he’s a

drug dealer. I think he and his dad will do anything to protect themselves.”

Jessy blinks, alarmed. “Don’t tell me you’re gonna hook up with this dude.”

“You think that little of me?”

He throws up his hands. “Then what are you planning?”

I shrug, tilting my head. “Be a dumb blonde. I’m really good at that.”

Jessy’s eyes narrow, and he doesn’t look convinced. In fact, he looks like I just started babbling in Arabic.” And… what’s with the fake gun?”

A sly smirk spreads across my face. “Patience. You’ll see.”

I realized I wanted to be an actress the first time I watched Mean Girls. I must have been thirteen, maybe fourteen, and there she was-Regina George in that perfect blonde wig, running every scene like a perfect queen. I remember thinking, I want to do that. I want people to feel everything I feel, just by looking at me.

Luckily, I’ve always been able to convey emotions the way a good actress does and tonight, I’m betting on

those skills.

Then there’s the other trick: men and their, uh… natural instincts. I’ll never understand why they’re called natural leaders when all it takes is the right pair of boobs and a well-placed ass to have them eating out of your hand. One look at the right curve, the right smile, and suddenly their strategic thinking goes out the window. And lucky me? I just happen to have both.

I step into the rundown bar Black likes to haunt. Just like Jessy warned me, it’s a den for every lowlife imaginable: drug dealers dealing, thieves stealing, and zero judgment for anyone dumb enough to wander in. If there were an award for the stinkiest place in town, this place would win, hands down.

Jessy also said Black would be at the far end of the room, probably twirling a knife like he owns the place. I scan the bar, and sure enough…there he is. Spot-on with the description. The guy’s clearly a creature of
