Chapter 0118
ALLISON’S POV
“Don’t you think you should be more expressive for this scene?” I ask Deon, my castmate, as we go over our lines before shooting. He’s playing a minor role like me, but he’s already been in four films,
making him officially more experienced.
I won’t say he’s better than me at acting, but there’s something called connections in this industry,
and I’m starting to understand exactly how much privilege they come with. Of course, I knew nepotism existed. Everyone does. But seeing it this close, watching it operate right in front of you,
turns it into a bitter pill to swallow.
And yes, I know Sandra recommended me for this role two weeks ago. But that was because of my abilities, not because my parents pulled strings. Besides, I still had to audition.
“It says he’s mildly upset about the whole situation,” Deon responds, eyes still on his script. “That’s what I’m doing.”
And maybe I’m being unfair, but there’s also that undertone of ego like he’s convinced his face alone carries the scene. Add the fact that his family name opens doors, which I’ve already
mentioned and yeah… it’s genuinely driving me up the wall.
“I’m not trying to tell you what to do.” I say, fanning myself because we are crammed into a small room packed with equipment and it is not pleasant. “Just that I think your expression doesn’t really emphasize the dialogue and how he’s actually supposed to feel.”
He waves me off, smirking. “Don’t worry, I’ve done this a couple of times. Micro expressions make
a better actor.”
Micro expressions, sure. But not non-existent ones. He gives the same face for everything and it
throws me off because we share most of our scenes together. Sometimes I even start wondering
if I’m the one doing too much.
My phone buzzes in my pocket and I pull it out immediately, already knowing it’s Justin. He’s the
only one I let text me while I’m on set.
ROCK FACE: How’s it going, baby? When will you be back? What would you like for dinner?
Justin’s been cleared officially by Gerald and a sports physician some days ago and aside from getting ready to play his first game after a long time, he’s been incredibly supportive. He keeps bragging to everyone about seeing me on TV and I just know he’s already planning to print a custom shirt and show up doing the most, not that I’m complaining. I love that man with everything I have and he is the absolute love of my life.
A smile stretches across my face as I text him back.
ME: I’m prepping for my next scene. Tried the talking thing with Deon but he’s not budging. Swears he’s a good actor and micro expressions do the job. Dinner…let’s do something light. Have to work early tomorrow.
“Your boyfriend?” Deon’s voice cuts in, and I lift my head to look at him. “You’re smiling.”
“Yeah,” I say, placing my phone down and picking up my script again. “And I wasn’t smiling.”
“You were,” he insists. “You always do.”
Which didn’t stop him from asking if I was in an open relationship, by the way. Truly, men in the entertainment industry can be disgusting and I’m just very grateful I’m not kissing anyone on screen. Yet.
“How did you guys meet?” Deon asks, snapping me out of my thoughts.
“My boyfriend and I?”
“Yeah,” he says. “Who else?”
I sigh, my lips pressing together with annoyance, but I push it down.
“College.” I answer dryly. “He’s my best friend’s brother and also a friend. He’s also my best friend’s boyfriend’s best friend so we’re kind of destined to be together.”
He looks amused. “Or your friend group is just freaky.”
My nose scrunches. “What’s freaky about what I just told you?”
“Your best friend’s boyfriend’s best friend?” He asks, cocking an eyebrow. “HBO would love you guys.”
apparently urgency is beneath him.
We follow Tara out into the corridor and that’s when Wyatt appears from around the corner,
walking toward us with quick steps.
“Good day, Mr. Wyatt.” I greet as he stops in front of us.
“Good day.” He looks between me and Deon. “I was actually looking for you two. Come with me for a second. Need to have a quick word.”
We follow him a little ways up the corridor while Tara hangs back, scrolling on her phone.
“So.” Wyatt turns to face us, crossing his arms loosely. “The scene we’re shooting today is important. It’s not your scene per se but the way a scene breathes depends on everyone in it, not just the leads. You two help amplify it and I need it to flow the way I like.”
“We’ve been going over our lines.” I respond.
He nods, glancing at me. “I’ve seen what you can do.” Then he turns to Deon. “And I need you to be a bit expressive with your face. Give me something to work with.”
I press my lips together, fighting a laugh.
Deon notices and his jaw ticks before he responds to Wyatt. “I’ll do my best.”
Wyatt claps him on the shoulder. “Good. Now go get ready, both of you. Looks like rain and I want
to wrap everything we can before it comes down.”
We nod and he starts walking away the same way he came before we can say anything else.
I let exactly two seconds pass before the laugh escapes through my nose. I don’t look at Deon but
I feel his glare and honestly, that’s enough for me. I slide him one slow, sly smirk before turning back toward Tara.
“Okay.” I say cheerfully, falling into step beside her. “Let’s go.”
