Chapter 0122
ALLISON’S POV
+25 Points
Watching your boyfriend play hockey from the front row is one thing. But watching while wearing his jacket, his name literally on your back? Yeah… that’s something else.
This is Justin’s first game since he was cleared to play again, and if my heart is racing this hard, I can’t even imagine what it feels like for him.
Cadston’s arena is also very big and loud, music thumping from the speakers overhead, the bass so heavy it vibrates through the bleachers and up into my seat.
Everywhere I look is red and gold, packed into every row, and I tug Justin’s jacket tighter around my shoulders.
It’s enormous on me, obviously. The sleeves swallow my hands and the length hits mid–thigh and Evans stretches across my back in bold block letters. I acted casual about it when he gave it to me this morning and then I walked to the bathroom and promptly had a small, private crisis about how much I love him.
“Where’s Katy?” I murmur more to myself, glancing down at my watch. She went to grab snacks because we were both craving something to eat, and the game’s about to start. I just know she’ll cry if she comes back and realizes she missed puck drop.
I grab my phone to call her but stop, a commotion to my left, one clearly involving Braydon giving her return before I even turn. I spot her walking down the row in her platform slippers.
“You’re back,” I say as she reaches me, scrunching my nose at her. “I thought you were gonna miss the game or something.”
“Miss? Wearing this jacket?” She drops into the seat beside me, flipping her hair over the Cooper on her back with absolutely no subtlety. “No way.”
I let out a small laugh, but she pauses, one eyebrow lifting as she reaches into the jacket pocket. She pulls out a Quaker bar… plus a handful of candy.
And yeah, those are the snacks she could smuggle in and what she hopes to last the entire game time.
I take them from her and immediately reach under my seat and pull out the small bundle of signs we made last night at the kitchen table with craft paper and markers, plus the spare flags and sort through them before handing Katy her half.
Her sign reads COOPER 18 on one side and MY BOYFRIEND IS FASTER THAN YOURS on the

other, which she had been extremely pleased with. Mine is just J on one side, and on the other, in letters I’d gone over three times to make sure they were straight – Welcome back, 22.
“Game’s starting soon,” I tell her, nodding toward the ice where the refs are doing their pre–game sweep.
Katy glances down at her sign, then out at the rink, a smile spreading across her face.
Then she straightens up, raises her flag, and shakes it aggressively. “Let’s go, Cadston.”
Someone behind me lets out a long whistle and a group of three friends that are rows behind us starts a chant that gets picked up and carried around.
Then the tunnel opens and the boys skate out, making everyone cheer and increase their vibe.
I find Justin by his Number 22 and he makes the first loop with the group, then peels off slightly, taking a puck from the pile near the boards and moving with it.
He looks totally cool. He’s always looked like that and that’s not even a problem.
“Justin looks good,” Katy says beside me.
“Yeah.” I answer, bobbing my head.
“I wonder how many goals he can score tonight.” She bumps my shoulder with a mischievous grin.
But I’m just happy he’s back playing the sports he loves. I’m happy that despite everything that happened, he managed to overcome them and he’s back.

JUSTIN’S POV
Allison is lying across the bed with her head in my lap, eyes closed, and one hand curled loosely against her chest.
I’ve been running my fingers through her hair for the past few minutes, and she hasn’t moved. Her breathing has also gone soft and even like she’s fallen asleep.
I shift carefully, slowly trying to rise so she doesn’t wake up if her head hits the bed. But then, her fingers close around my wrist before I’m even halfway up.
“You’re not going anywhere,” she murmurs, not opening her eyes.

I settle back. “So you haven’t slept.”
“I was resting my eyes.” She responds.

“For twelve minutes?” I ask, completely shocked because I could have sworn she was asleep.
“That’s what resting means.”
I look down at her and she still hasn’t opened her eyes. There’s a faint crease on her cheek from my shirt and her hair is going in three different directions and I think she’s the best thing
I’ve ever seen.
“You want me to sleep so you can sneak out,” she says.
“I want to wash up.” I tug gently at her grip. “That’s it.”
She’s quiet for a second, then her hold loosens.
“I’m only letting you because you played well tonight,” she says.
I laugh. “Noted.”
But I don’t move yet and just stay with my hand in her hair and the quiet of the room settling around us, and I think about the tunnel tonight: standing at the mouth of it, stick in my hand, ice stretched out ahead of me, and the way my heart was hammering.
“I was scared,” I say, not really meaning to say it out loud. “Before the game.”
Allison opens her eyes. She doesn’t sit up, but just tilts her head to look at me from her spot in my lap.
