Fake Dating My Ex's Hockey Star Brother (Maya Scott) novel Chapter 44

KATY’S POV

My eyes widen, and instinctively, I press a finger to my lips, signaling Braydon to keep quiet. His brows pull together in confusion, but I don’t wait for him to get it. Grabbing his arm, I tug him toward the bathroom.

“Don’t make a sound,” I whisper, my voice barely audible. He nods, his eyes glinting with amusement like this is some kind of game, but it’s not funny. My pulse is all over the place as I quietly shut the bathroom door behind him.

For a second, I stand there, adjusting my shirt and trying to catch my breath. I know there’s nothing technically wrong with what we’re doing but it definitely doesn’t feel right having him here when Mrs. Katherine’s the one who paid for this room. The thought of her walking in and finding a very sex-craving jock in here is not the kind of image I want to leave her with.

I take a deep breath, plaster on a sleepy face, and swing open the door. Immediately she sees me, she exhales like she’s been holding her breath and worrying.

“Were you sleeping already?” she asks, pressing her lips together.

“Almost,” I say, letting out a fake yawn and rubbing my eyes. “Have you been waiting out here for long?”

“Oh no.” She shakes her head quickly, her ponytail bouncing. Then she lifts the plastic bags in her hands with a shy little smile. “I just realized I never asked if you had dinner. And then I remembered how ridiculously overpriced hotel food is for a college student, so…” She gestures with the bags. “I grabbed a few things for you. Didn’t think you’d be asleep already.”

“It’s fine,” I say a little too fast, cutting her off before guilt can eat me alive. “I’m actually starving, honestly and that’s probably why I slept so early.”

She seems relieved, her shoulders relaxing as she steps forward and presses the bags into my arms and I nearly drop them because of the weight.

“Whoa…what’s in here, bricks?” I whisper under my breath, trying to balance them. There’s at least three takeout boxes and what feels like a two-liter drink.

She just laughs softly and reaches up to pat my chin, the way moms do. “You can refrigerate some of them,” she says. “There’s some pizza, juice, and sandwiches…oh, and doughnuts for breakfast.”

My chest warms, guilt mixing with gratitude. Here she is, standing in the hallway with takeout and good intentions, while I’ve got a very horny Braydon hiding in the bathroom behind me.

“Thank you,” I murmur softly, clutching the bags a little tighter. “I’ll definitely eat them all.”

She chuckles. “You don’t have to. I probably bought too much.” She grabs my shirt with her finger. “You’ve lost a little bit of weight so….”

I shyly bite my lips. “I didn’t even notice.”

She laughs, then exhales. “Allie’s getting her feeding tube out tomorrow,” she says. “So… hopefully all this is over soon.”

I nod, trying to ignore the way my chest tightens at the mention of Allie. “She’s been through a lot these past few days. I just really need her to recover.”

She gives me a gentle pat on the arm. “She’ll be fine. Good night, Katy.”

“Good night, Mrs Katherine.” I respond and then she turns down the hall and I wait until she’s out of sight, then quietly close the door.

The second it clicks shut, I lean against it, exhaling hard, the bags digging into my arms.

“Is she gone?”

“Oh, Jesus!” I flinch so hard the bags almost hit the floor and my heart’s still in my throat when I realize it’s Braydon’s voice.

He’s standing a few feet away, one eyebrow raised. “Did you already forget you locked me in there?” he asks, nodding toward the bathroom.
