CHAPTER 117
MIE
Simon didn’t notice.
Or if he did, he didn’t show a thing.
Five minutes later, we were in the car on the way to Hart Enterprises, and I was still trying to figure out why it bothered me so much.
It wasn’t jealousy.
At least, not the small, ridiculous kind that makes a woman turn another woman’s body into a threat.
Chloe could have piercings wherever she wanted. She could hate bras. She could wear whatever she wanted in her personal life.
But she wasn’t in her personal life.
She worked inside the house where the kids lived. Where Simon lived. Where I was starting to live too.
Maybe there was a difference between controlling another woman’s body and expecting some sense of professional appropriateness.
Or maybe I was inventing a problem because Susan had planted a stupid idea in my head.
Simon’s hand landed on my thigh.
I squinted out the window.
“Where are you?” he asked.
“Here.”
His fingers squeezed my thigh once.
“Your body is. I asked about your head.”
I turned to face him.
“Nothing.”
“Bad lie, Collins.”
“I’m thinking about work.”
“A slightly better lie.”
“Simon.”
He studied me for two seconds, then shrugged.
“Fine. When you decide to tell me, I’ll act surprised.”

“You’re insufferable, you know that?”
Taughed.
“Is it too late to run?” I asked.
“Way too late.”
He said it so seriously that I laughed.
And it was enough to get Chloe out of my head.
Work took care of the rest.
I spent the morning in a contract review, ate lunch at my computer, and by three, I was on a video call with two outside firms arguing over a clause someone should have fixed three versions ago.
Simon showed up twice.
The first time, he walked in without knocking, stole half my coffee, listened to thirty seconds of the meeting, and left after I pointed at the door.
The second time, he poked his head in.
“Dinner at seven.”
“I have work.”
“So do I.”
“Then why are you going to dinner?”
“Because I’m too pretty to starve over a spreadsheet.”
“I still have work.”
“I’ll wait till seven.”
He disappeared.
At six forty-five, I was still working.
The door opened.
I didn’t even look up.
“I’m not done.”
“Not my problem.”
Simon walked in, closed my laptop with one hand, and stood in front of the desk.
I looked up slowly.

saved it first.”
“How do you know?”
“I checked first.”
I got up from the chair.
“And another thing. I’m your boss… here, I’m in charge.”
I walked around the desk and stopped in front of him.
“Are you using that as an argument because you’ve lost all the others?”
He grabbed my waist.
“I’m using it because I’ve been counting the minutes to do this.”
Simon kissed me..
No rush. Like the glass wall of my office and anyone still on that floor simply didn’t exist.
I pushed him back before someone had a chance to catch us.
“Let’s go, Hart.”
He smiled, grabbed my bag before I could protest, and held out his other hand.
I looked at it.
“What?”
“Your hand, Counselor. I assume you have one.”
“For what?”
“To hold your fiancé’s.”
I rolled my eyes but laced our fingers together.
I only noticed the difference when we left my office.
People looked.
Not because they’d never seen us together. The whole company knew. Our engagement was hardly a
secret.
But this was different.
Simon wasn’t guiding me with a hand on my back at an event, or walking me to a car, or posing for a photo.

We were just walking through the office holding hands.
ke a couple.
An analyst looked up from her monitor and smiled. An associate tried to pretend he wasn’t watching and almost walked into a glass partition. Simon didn’t even slow down.
“People are staring,” I murmured.
“Let them.”
I looked at him.
Then he added:
“In a few months, you’re going to own half this company. They better get used to it.”
He brought my hand to his mouth and kissed my fingers while we waited for the elevator.
When we got home, there was a sheet stuck to the side of the fridge.
Actually, three.
School schedules. Activities. Authorized medications, phone numbers, gym days, snack preferences, homework, bath time, and even a small column with things each kid tended to forget.
“What’s this?” Simon asked.
Chloe appeared from the kitchen with Lily behind her.
“I organized the routine. I hope you don’t mind. Some things were on the fridge, some were in the school group, and some I just wrote down. I figured it was easier to keep it all in one place.”
Simon picked up the first sheet.
“Jack, soccer Tuesday and Thursday. Sam, tutoring Wednesday. Lily, ballet Friday.”
“And therapy every other Thursday,” Chloe added. “I put the dates through the end of the month.”
He scanned the page.
“This is really good.”
\ “Thank you.”
Her smile was small, almost shy.
“I just wanted to make things easier. I know you two work a lot.”
It was efficient.
Objectively efficient.
And I would have done exactly the same thing if I were organizing a complicated case.

“It’s great, I agreed.
Toe’s face turned to me.
“Glad you liked it, Jamie. I was afraid it might come off as overstepping.”
“Organization is never overstepping,” I said.
She gave me a slightly forced smile.
“I’m going to check if Lily finished putting her pencils away.”
“Already did!” Lily announced.
“Then let’s double-check together.”
The two of them left.
Simon opened the fridge.
“At least now someone in this house knows where things are.”
“Didn’t Sylvia already know?”
“Sylvia refuses to share that information with me because she enjoys watching me suffer.”
He grabbed a bottle of water. That’s when I noticed a new package on the counter.
