CHAPTER 179

AMIE

The first thing I heard was something metal clattering to the floor.

I opened my eyes slowly. Simon’s side of the bed was empty, but his pillow still smelled like him. For a few seconds, I stared at the pale ceiling, trying to remember where we were. Then I caught sight of the ocean through the glass door and smiled.

Our island. My God. I’d married Simon Hart, and now I was waking up on an island named after me.

Another crash came from downstairs.

“Please tell me you’re not destroying the kitchen,” I murmured, though he couldn’t hear me.

I took a quick shower, dried my hair, and opened the suitcase Kelly had packed. Out came a white bikini. Then a black one. A third that was barely there. Underneath them were lingerie sets, two cover–ups, and more lingerie.

I dug through everything. Not one decent T–shirt. Not a single outfit that wouldn’t fit in an envelope.

“Oh, Kelly. You’re going to pay for this, you little brat.”

I grabbed my phone. She’d sent me a message the night before: Hope you enjoy your honeymoon, Mrs. Hart. Don’t worry about a thing!

A red heart at the end made it that much worse.

I wanted to send back something that sounded a lot like a threat, with a few choice words thrown in. Instead, I took a breath and put on a red lingerie set with a sheer robe over it. Thanks to my husband’s wonderfully resourceful assistant, this was pretty much all I had to wear on my honeymoon.

I followed the smell of coffee downstairs, along with something that might have been burning butter.

Simon stood with his back to me in dark linen pants and a gray shirt. He had a spatula in one hand and was studying the frying pan with the kind of focus he usually reserved for the toughest meetings at Hart.

I stopped in the doorway.

“Should I call Legal?” I teased.

“Only if the eggs decide to sue.”

He turned around. And froze.

His gaze traveled slowly down my body, came back to my face, then dropped again. The spatula hung in midair. I’d never seen Simon Hart lose his train of thought quite so completely.

“Good morning to you, too,” I said.

“Jamie.”

“Simon.”

hat the hell are you wearing?”

I looked down at myself.

“Technically? Clothes.”

He gave a disbelieving laugh and ran his free hand through his hair.

“Are you trying to drive me crazy?”

“Take it up with Kelly. She packed half a lingerie store and apparently forgot that normal people need something to wear to breakfast, even on their honeymoon.”

“She did?”

“Did you say something to your assistant?”

Simon frowned, looking genuinely confused.

“No. I asked her to pack for you and make sure you had everything you needed. That’s it.”

I studied his face. He looked far too surprised to be lying.

“Great. So she decided to humiliate me all on her own.”

“I’m not seeing a downside.”

“Of course you aren’t. You’re shameless.”

The pan hissed. Simon glanced down and swore under his breath.

“The eggs,” I warned.

“I’m watching them.”

I moved closer to take a look. Some of the pieces had gone well past golden brown. Calling them scrambled eggs seemed generous.

“Impressive. You made crunchy eggs.”

“Sleep well?”
