I kept running, but I couldn’t find the woman anywhere. It was as if she’d vanished into thin air. I slowed down and dug my phone out of my purse. Two missed calls from Simon. I tried calling back, but the call wouldn’t even connect.
Great. Of all the times.
I followed the alley to a small square surrounded by low-rise buildings. A few people were talking outside a corner grocery store, but there was no sign of the woman.
I stopped to catch my breath and looked around.
Splitting up had been a terrible idea. I knew it, and Simon knew it. And I was willing to bet he’d remind me the second we found each other.
I checked my phone again. I had service.
I was about to call Simon when I heard hurried footsteps behind me.
I turned too quickly and collided with a tall, broad-shouldered man. The impact sent me stumbling back a
step.
He wore a dark jacket, had a scar through his left eyebrow, and held a cigarette between his fingers.
“Watch where you’re going,” he snapped, glaring at me.
“Sorry. I’m looking for someone.”
His gaze swept over my clothes, sunglasses, and the purse I held against my body.
“You’re not from around here.”
“No.”
“Then what were you doing running through here?”
There was something unpleasant about how calmly he asked.
“I’m working. I need to find a woman who lives in the area.”
“What kind of work?”
“I’m an attorney.”
He gave a short laugh.
“An attorney? Here?”

“Is that a problem?”
“Depends who you’re looking for.”
I tried to step around him.
“Excuse me.”
He moved sideways, blocking my path.
“I asked what somebody who doesn’t live here is doing running through our streets.”

Our. It wasn’t the neighborhood that bothered me. It was the way he said the word, like he got to decide who was allowed through.
“I already answered you,” I said firmly. “Now I need to go.
He leaned in. I smelled tobacco and stale coffee.
“You here with the guy who owns that Ferrari?”
My stomach tightened.
“I don’t know what car you’re talking about.”
“Sure you do.”
Across the square, two men stepped out of the grocery store. Neither seemed interested in me until the stranger raised his hand. Then they changed direction.
I thought about screaming. There were people nearby. But most of them looked away when they recognized him.
I reached for my phone.
“I’m calling my husband.”
He grabbed my wrist before I could touch the screen.
“No, you’re not.”
“Let go of me.”
“Easy, princess. I just want to talk.”
