The Range Rover was strapped to the flatbed, and we were riding in the tow truck’s crew cab, squeezed together in the back seat like a couple of teenagers who’d gotten ught doing something they shouldn’t.

Technically, we’d done several things we shouldn’t have.

But nobody needed to know that.

“You’re smiling,” I pointed out.

Simon looked out the window at the road passing beneath the morning sun.

“I’m trying not to think about the repair bill.”

“You’re a terrible liar.”

“I’m an excellent liar. I just don’t feel the need to impress my wife.”

I’d spent almost the entire night awake, then fallen asleep in a position that probably violated every recommendation modern medicine had to offer. My hair was a tangled mess, there was dirt on the cuffs of my jeans, and the man beside me looked ridiculously pleased with life.

His eyes met mine. Heat crept into my cheeks, and I nudged him with my elbow.

“We have company.”

“I didn’t say anything inappropriate.”

“You don’t have to.”

Simon took my hand on the seat between us and laced his fingers through mine. I shifted in the cramped space, but the seam of my jeans scraped the abrasion on my calf, making me wince.

“Does it hurt?” he asked.

“What?”

“Your leg.”

I looked at him, surprised he even remembered. The night before, a passing car’s

headlights had startled us, and we’d ended up sliding off the hood of the Range Rover.

I’d scraped my calf against the dirt. Simon had checked it right away and decided it was nothing more than a scratch.

“Only when my jeans rub against it. Don’t worry. It’s just a scrape.”

He studied me for a moment, then leaned over and kissed my forehead so tenderly that I briefly forgot we were crammed into the back of a tow truck with the driver sa few feet away.

The moment my phone got service again, notifications started pouring in/Some were work messages; others were missed calls. I straightened instinctively.

Simon noticed.

“You don’t have to answer everything right now.”

“I need to at least make sure nothing happened.”

“Then check. Just don’t mistake being reachable for being responsible for carrying the entire company on your back twenty-four hours a day.”

I stared at him.

“Did the owner of the company really just say that?”

“Your husband said it. The owner of the company agrees.”

There was a difference between a man who promised to take care of me and a man who respected my work enough to know when to give me room to do it.

Simon did both.

And somehow, he made me fall even harder for him when he wasn’t even trying to be romantic.

We got home a little while later.

Simon climbed out first and went over the repair shop’s information and towing paperwork with the driver.

When he held out his hand to help me down, I took it, even though I was perfectly capable of getting out on my own.

We came in through the side door, and I stopped short when I spotted Chloe in the hallway.

She was wearing dark tailored pants, a delicate light-colored blouse, and slender heels,

Her blonde hair was swept into an elegant bun, leaving her face completely unobstructed.

For a moment, I could hardly reconcile her with the shy, plainly dressed woman who’d first arrived at our house.

Dressed like that, she looked like one of those wealthy society women who attended charity galas and had lunch at expensive restaurants.

It was quite a transformation, especially for someone as understated as Chloe

Still, I had to admit she looked beautiful. The clothes fit her perfectly, and the polished look gave her an air of confidence I’d never seen in her before.

“Wow,” I murmured.

Chloe immediately touched her bun.

“Is it too much? I knew I might’ve overdone it. I’m sorry, I just… thought I should make more of an effort with my appearance.”

“Chloe, relax. You look gorgeous. And so put together!”

She lowered her gaze, a small smile tugging at her lips.

“Thank you.”

“Going somewhere?” I asked.

“I thought I’d run a few errands later. But I’ve already taken the kids to school. They all had breakfast, and I got their backpacks ready for tomorrow.”

“Thank you. Seriously.”

“It’s nothing. I like helping.”

Simon took off his jacket and draped it over his arm. His gaze swept the hallway, taking in the unusual quiet.

“Did they get there on time?”

“Yes, sir. No problems at all.”

“Good. Thank you, Chloe.”
