CHAPTER 208

JAMIE

By that night, the house had finally gone quiet.

I’d been working late into the night for days just trying to keep up. My cortisol levels were probably through the roof, I could barely sleep, and I was practically running on coffee. Even so, there was still far too much to do.

It was past midnight, and I was still in my office, wearing pajamas, my hair twisted into a messy bun, my eyes aching from hours of reviewing documents.

For the third time, I reread the chief operating officer’s statement. One detail didn’t match the company’s records, and I needed to clear it up before the prosecutors noticed the discrepancy.

I flagged the passage, requested the supporting documents from our legal team, and opened the list of potential witnesses.

Annie’s name was at the top.

We’d already forwarded her information to the prosecutor’s office, along with the documents explaining why her testimony might be relevant.

I hoped the prosecutors would subpoena her to testify.

Annie could ignore our emails, dodge our calls, even disappear for a while. But if she was served with an official subpoena, she couldn’t simply pretend none of this was happening.

And I was especially interested in what she had to say.

“Planning to stare at that screen until it gives you the answers?”

I swiveled my chair around.

Simon stood in the doorway in gray sweats, his arms folded across his chest. His hair was a mess, and he wore that familiar serious expression.

“I’m getting close,” I said.

He came in, glancing at the clock.

“Jamie, it’s one in the morning.”

“I know.”

imon, please. I’ve got so much to do. If the prosecutors get the order they’re asking for, the company could feel the impact immediately.”

He moved closer but let me finish.

“I’m just trying to keep things from getting worse.”

Simon pulled up a chair beside mine.

“I know. But I’d rather lose money than watch you destroy your health trying to save my company. I can make more money, Jamie. I can’t necessarily give you your health back.”

I looked at him. The sincerity in his voice got through to me more than any carefully rehearsed declaration ever could.

“You make it sound like you want me to quit working.”

“I sound like a man who doesn’t want to find his wife passed out on her keyboard.”

“Dramatic.”

“Realistic. You ate half a sandwich for dinner.”

“It was a big sandwich.”

“Jamie.”

I sighed.

“I asked the team to put Annie on the potential witness list. We sent another email, but if she keeps ignoring us, we’ll ask for a formal subpoena.”

Simon thought about that for a moment.

“You know, I’ve been thinking about it today. What if we’re wrong about her?” he asked. “Annie could be hiding for reasons that have nothing to do with the factory. And even if she does testify, who’s to say she’ll tell the truth?”

“That’s a risk. But we need to hear what she has to say.”

Simon was quiet for a few seconds. Then he stood and stepped behind my chair, resting his warm, steady hands on my shoulders.

“You’re tense as hell.”

“Thanks for the compliment.”

He pressed his thumbs into the muscles at the base of my neck. A moan slipped out before I could stop it.

“Oh my God.”

“Was that a compliment?” he asked close to my ear.

“Don’t take advantage of me when I’m vulnerable.”

“Never.”

Liar. His fingers found the exact spot that had been tormenting me for hours, and closed my eyes.

“We’re going to be okay,” he murmured. “Not because I think we’ll win every fight. But because Hart will deal with whatever comes. And I don’t want you making yourself sick over it.”

I moaned again.

“Come to bed? You can finish tomorrow.”

I opened my eyes and looked at the paperwork. The truth was, he was right. An

exhausted attorney wasn’t going to solve any of this in the middle of the night. I saved my files, made a note of what still needed doing, and locked my screen.

“Okay.”

Simon stepped back to let me stand. I held out my arms to him.

“Carry me?”
