CHAPTER 72
AMIE
Morning light cut through my bedroom curtains like an intruder. Still, I woke up lighter than I’d felt in weeks.
It wasn’t until I passed through the living room that I saw the folder on the dining table.
I stopped.
Shit.
The company documents.
He must have forgotten to take them last night.
I picked up the folder and flipped through a few pages. Recognized the name of the Arab group he’d been negotiating with for weeks. From what Simon had mentioned, this would probably be the first really important meeting with outside partners of the month.
And he wasn’t even going to swing by the office before the meeting.
I looked at the folder again.
I could have called a courier. Could have asked someone from the office to pick it up. There were at least a dozen more sensible ways to handle this.
But these were important documents. Too important to risk them arriving late.
That’s what I told myself, anyway.
Because before I knew it, I already had my bag on my shoulder, walking out the door and hailing a cab to deliver them in person.
The doorman at his building recognized me instantly, let me up.
When the doors opened onto the penthouse, I heard voices before I saw anything- laughter, shrieks, the unmistakable chaos of three kids let loose.
And I stepped into the apartment and my heart stopped.
Simon was in the kitchen, spinning in circles, Lily riding on his back like a tiny superhero. She wore a Wonder Woman tiara that kept slipping over her eyes, her little hands clutching his shoulders as she screamed with joy.
“Faster, Uncle Simon! FASTER!”
Sam was on the counter wearing a Hulk mask, roaring at nothing. Jack, dressed as Spider-Man, ate cereal beside them.
The nanny was laughing against the counter.

I stopped in the doorway, clutching the documents to my chest, watching that soft scene.

Sinon saw me first. He didn’t stop moving- kept running in circles with Lily on his back- but his face lit up with a smile so wide something cracked inside me.
Lily spotted me and immediately started bouncing on Simon’s back. “MISS JAMIE! YOU CAME BACK!”
“Traitor,” Simon muttered. “I’ve been carrying her for twenty minutes and she’s already picking sides.”
I walked toward them, still holding the folder. “I brought this back. You forgot it at my place.”
I held up the papers, and Simon’s eyes landed on them for a second. “Shit. Sorry. I didn’t leave it there on purpose. I swear.”
“I know, relax. That’s why I brought it to you. Figured the meeting was off-site, so…”
The nanny stepped forward, extending her hand. Her grip was firm, her smile warm. “You must be Jamie I’m Mary. I’ve heard a lot about you.”
I blinked. “Heard?”
“Only good things,” she said. “The kids haven’t stopped talking about Jamie, Uncle Simon’s nice girlfriend.”
“Oh, right, girlfriend…” I smiled nervously.
Lily tugged my hand. “Miss Jamie, do you want to be a superhero too? We have extra capes!”
“Lily, sweetie, I have to work now.” I knelt to her level. “But I promise I’ll set a day to play with you guys, okay?”
“Okay!” She beamed, and the sincerity in that smile made something twist in my chest.
Simon followed me to the elevator, the kids stayed in the kitchen with Mary. When I reached the elevator doors, he pulled me close before I could press the button. His lips brushed the corner of my mouth, a quick kiss, almost sneaky.
“You saved the day.”
“Don’t exaggerate. I just brought a folder.” I forced my voice to sound light.
“You brought more than that.” He tilted his head, that dangerous smile appearing. “And now? When do we see each other?”
“Next Friday.” I pressed the elevator button.
“Next Friday?” He grumbled. “That’s way too far.”
“You’ll survive.”
“You promised Lily you’d come play.”
“You’re using Lily as an excuse.” I slapped his arm.
He laughed, and I couldn’t help laughing too.
