CHAPTER 99
MON
The Westbridge Medical Center parking lot was still slick with drizzle when I pulled the Ferrari/in at 7:42.
Ian, efficient as always, had found out Oliver’s surgery was scheduled for nine and gotten my name on the visitors’ list.
I got past security with a temporary badge and took the elevator up to the third floor. The hallway smelled like antiseptic and stale coffee.
A resident on duty appeared in front of me, dark circles under her eyes, a cup in her hand.
“Sir, you can’t be up here. This is a restricted area.”
I looked at her. Smiled.
“I’m here to see a friend. Dr. Oliver. Is he in?”
The woman studied me for a second. The Armani suit. The watch. The smile I used in meetings with billionaire investors.
“Of course,” she said, her voice softer. “He’s resting in the room at the end of the hall.”
“Thank you. I won’t be long.”
She nodded and disappeared.
I walked to the end of the corridor and pushed the door open. It swung in silently.
The room was small. An old couch, a coffee table covered in medical journals, a metal cabinet, an exam table shoved against the wall. And on the couch, flat on his back, mouth wide open, sleeping like a baby. was the man I’d come to see.
I closed the door slowly. The click was barely audible.
I moved toward the couch, my eyes locked on his face. The marks I’d left last time were still there-a greenish yellow spreading across his jaw and around his eye socket.
My hand found his shoulder. I shook him once. Twice.
He didn’t wake up.
So I woke him up the right way.
The slap cracked through the silence of the room. His head snapped to the side, and Oliver jolted awake, eyes wide, his whole body going rigid.
“WHAT THE-”
He saw me. And all the color drained from his face.

FAKE DATING WITH BENEFITS: MY BILLIONAIRE BOSS
“Morning, Doc.”
mon-” His voice came out thin. “What are you-how did you-”
“Thought I wouldn’t need to see you again.” I stepped forward, hands in my pockets, voice calm. “But after what you did Saturday night, I realized I was very… very wrong about that.”
He sat up on the couch, scrambling back until he hit the metal armrest. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Oh, where’s all that courage now? You only got the guts to hit a woman?”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“I’m talking about what happened in front of Jamie’s building. You cornered her, put your hands on her. and hurt her.”
“Vanessa already told me the truth. You two aren’t together. Jamie’s just using you to make me jealous.”
“Listen to me very carefully. What’s between me and Jamie is none of your business. But if you ever put a finger on her again, not every surgeon in this hospital combined will be able to fix what I do to your face.”
The punch landed on his jaw. Oliver’s head whipped back, and I felt warm blood running down my knuckles. Before he could fall, I grabbed him by the lab coat and threw him back onto the couch.
He tried to fight back. A desperate swing, no power, no aim. His fist caught my lip, and I tasted iron spreading through my mouth.
I wiped the blood with the back of my hand.
Looked at the red on my fingers.
And smiled.
“Not bad, actually. You hit harder than I expected.”
I brought my hand to my mouth and ran my thumb across the cut on my lip. The blood was still flowing, hot and metallic. I licked it slowly, never looking away from him.
Oliver tracked every movement. The hand that had hit me was shaking now at his side. He tried to shove it into his lab coat pocket, but missed the opening on the first try.
! I smiled.
“You know I’ve been arrested before, Oliver?”
What little color was left in his face disappeared.
I took another step.
“I was seventeen. A friend of mine mocked my father in front of everyone. Made jokes. Humiliated the man I admired most and thought I’d just stand there and take it.”
Oliver flinched back and hit the couch.

“I broke his face. Literally. Jaw, nose, two ribs, and an open fracture in his arm when he tried to shield himself.” I tilted my head. “Thank God he didn’t die.”
Onver’s breathing turned short and ragged.
“I was tried as an adult. Did a few years, then got house arrest. My conviction wasn’t overturned until I turned twenty-two. Good lawyers, mishandled evidence, a prosecutor who made too many mistakes…. I shrugged. “You know how these things go.”
I moved closer until there was no space left for him to run.
“But I’m not telling you this to impress you. I’m telling you so you understand one thing about me: when someone hurts the people I love, something inside me breaks. I don’t see consequences. I don’t think about tomorrow. For me, it’s always been all or nothing.” My smile vanished. “That’s how it was that night. That’s how it is in business. And that’s how it is right now.”
Oliver swallowed hard.
“Simon…”
“I can’t stand watching someone I love suffer. And guess what?” My voice dropped low, loaded with a rage that didn’t need to be shouted anymore. “I love that woman like crazy.”
My hand found the metal cabinet. I opened the door and scanned the shelves lined with surgical gloves and gauze packets. In the back, there was a metal splint-long, heavy, solid.
I picked it up.
Oliver went white.
“Simon… Simon, wait…”
“Wait?” I tilted my head, the splint swaying in my hand. “Did you give her time to wait?”
He dropped to the floor. On his ass. Crawling backward until he hit the wall.
“Please-please, I-”
I raised the splint. The shadow of the metal bar fell across his face.
Oliver screamed. A high, pathetic sound that didn’t match the cocky neurosurgeon he claimed to be.
“PLEASE! PLEASE!”
I stopped.
The metal hung in the air for a second. Two.
Then I knelt in front of him, the splint resting on the floor beside me.
“Come here, Oliver.” My voice came out low. Almost gentle. “I want you to listen to me very carefully.”
He nodded frantically, tears streaming down his face.
