The man closed his eyes briefly, then opened them again.
Bracing himself against the ground, he slowly sat up. A sharp pain exploded from the back of his head, making his brows knot tightly together.
He reached back and touched the back of his head, feeling a swollen lump about the size of an egg.
"That brat really didn't hold back." The man's gaze darkened slightly.
"Not just him. That little girl's vicious too!"
"She kicked you hard while you were unconscious," the second masked man added helpfully. "Right before she left. Got you right in your shin."
Hearing that, the man paused, his gaze slowly lowering toward his shin.
When he saw the clear shoe print there, he stared at it silently for several seconds before suddenly laughing.
The smile was faint, so faint it was almost imperceptible, but both masked men saw it.
The two exchanged a look at the same time, both thinking the same thing. Oh no. Had he gotten knocked stupid?
The guy got kicked and is still smiling?
"Let's go." The man stood up and dusted the dirt off his clothes. "Follow them."
"But Mr. Menzie, what about your injury?"
"It's nothing."
He strode forward quickly, though his steps wobbled slightly.
Lucas had hit him ridiculously hard.
There was still a giant lump swelling on his head.
Honestly, he was starting to think he had a concussion.
His head spun, and he felt slightly nauseous.
He staggered forward while the two masked men hurried after him.
Meanwhile.
After leaving the alley, Noelle and Lucas headed south along a stone-paved road.
It was already deep into the night. The streets were completely empty except for the sound of wind brushing against rooftops and the occasional bark of a distant dog.
The lighting along the road was so dim that it was hard to see clearly.
"Noey, do you know where Jasper's being held?" Lucas asked while walking.
"At the Duncan Residence," Noelle answered. "Christine said they locked him in the basement. I've been there before, so I know where it is."
Lucas nodded, and the two continued hurrying forward in silence, their footsteps echoing loudly through the empty streets.
After walking for a while, they came across a clinic ahead.
The door stood open, lights glowing inside, while the desperate cries of a woman drifted out.
