Chapter 152

Evelyn’s POV

Two days had passed since Kane first approached me with the idea of conducting a case study on the feral rogues. At first, I was both shocked and honored to be given this opportunity.

Kane went on to explain why I was considered to be the perfect ideal candidate for the project. Not only had I discovered the identical marks on the rogues’ necks, but I was the only one who could inherently

heal them.

“Why not take the chance to start documenting your own abilities?” he suggested with a glint in his eyes.

On top of it all, I saw it as another great chance to prove my dedication to the pack. I happily agreed to

take on such a task.

For the last few days, if I wasn’t working in the medical ward on my usual schedule, I spent the rest of my free time writing down all of my current findings. Kane had even offered me a space in his office where I could work in quiet peace.

At first, it was a little strange. I felt as though I was intruding on his private space. But after a little while, we’d grown used to each other working a few feet apart. It was during that time that I noticed that the ache in my chest had all but disappeared.

I should have realized that the two things were connected. Nevertheless, I was glad that I could put it behind me and move on.

It was late afternoon when I finished up my current log in the case study. Kane was still checking over numerous papers at his desk when I stood up from my table.

I gently cleared my throat, gaining his attention. “I was thinking…I want to start treating the rogues

again,” I said.

Kane sat back in his chair with a blank expression. “I see.” His eyes darted around his desk. “When do you plan on treating them?”

“Likely after dinner, once everyone else has checked out for the day,” I told him.

Kane stood up from his chair and placed both of his hands on top of his desk. A tender smile curved across his handsome face. “Well, then I suppose I’ll see you later at dinner.”

I offered a sheepish smile before slipping out of the office. My face was flushed from the newly developed tension that was blossoming between us. It was…A little odd at times. But I was determined to keep an open mind and give Kane the real chance to convince me of his feelings.

Throughout the day, I was hoping to run into Alexander at some given point. But it seemed like he was nowhere to be found. It left a strange feeling in the pit of my stomach.

It was during our lunch break that I glanced around the communal dining hall in search of my friend. Not a single sign of him.

Diana nudged my shoulder and gave me a questionable look. “Who are you looking for?”

“Alexander. I feel like I haven’t spoken to him, much less seen him a while,” I said.

Both she and Josie proceeded to glance around the large space. Neither of them was able to spot him.

“That is strange,” Diana acknowledged.

I tried not to think anything of it. Chances were that he was mulling about the gardens or hanging back in his room. I finished up my lunch and promptly left the dining hall to head to the gardens.

Turning each corner, my disappointment grew as I kept hoping to come across my friend sitting at one of the benches. But no. Feeling dejected and mildly worried, I went back into the house.

As I passed a small group of maids, they all turned their heads to greet me.

“Hello, Luna!”

They woke me from my train of thought. “Hello, ladies.” I quickly stopped short and turned back to speak. “While I’m here, have any of you seen Alexander?”
