Gabriel’s POV
I couldn’t bring myself to sit, not when every second without news felt like it was tearing me apart from the inside. Adrian sat slumped in the chair, elbows digging into his knees, his eyes red and weary. I kept pacing the floor in front of him, every muscle in my body wound tight like a bowstring.
“Dad,” Adrian said after a long silence, his voice tired. “You should sit down. You’ve been on your feet all night.”
I shook my head. “If I sit, I’ll fall apart. I can’t.”
He leaned forward, elbows on his knees. “Maybe you should let me stay here, and you go home. Get some rest.”
I stopped pacing and looked at him.
“No, you’ve got to get home, Adrian. You need rest, too. I’ll stay, and I’ll call you if anything changes.”
He shook his head quickly. “No. I’m not ready to leave you here alone. Not with her still…” His voice trailed off, but the weight of it pressed between us.
Before I could answer, the doors swung open. Dr. Elena walked in, this time with a faint smile tugging at her face. My heart stopped.
“Mr. Storm,” she said, glancing between the two of us, “I see you’re both still here.”
“There’s no way I could leave her,” I answered before Adrian could. My voice came out rougher than I intended, but I didn’t care.
Her smile widened a little. “That’s good to hear. Because I have good news. She’s out of the woods. The baby, too. They’re both stable now.”
The words hit me like sunlight breaking through storm clouds. “Thank you, Doctor. Thank you. You have no idea what this means to me.”
Beside me, Adrian’s voice broke. “Thank you… thank you for saving them.”
“You can see her soon,” Dr. Elena said gently. “She’s still weak, only one of you at a time.”
I turned to Adrian, but before I could speak, he gave me a small nod. “Go, Dad. She needs you.”
I gripped his shoulder once, grateful, then followed Dr. Elena down the hall.
I didn’t waste a second. Following Dr. Elena, I stepped into the room. The beeping machines were steady, soft reminders that she was still with me.
Clairessa lay against the white sheets, an IV in her arm, bandages wrapped around her shoulder. A faint bruise marked her temple where she’d fallen. Even so, she looked beautiful, too fragile, but beautiful.
“I’ll give you two some time,” Dr. Elena murmured, then slipped out.
I wasted no time before moving to her side. I brushed a few strands of hair back from her face. My fingers lingered, stroking softly. With my other hand, I slid my fingers around hers, careful of the monitor clipped to it.
“Sweetheart… baby, I’m here,” I whispered. My fingers trembled as I stroked her cheek. “Thank God you’re safe. Thank God you both are safe.”
Her hand twitched against the sheets, the monitor clipped to her finger beeping softly. I bent lower, pressing my lips to her knuckles, kissing them over and over.
