Family on Their Knees Heart Turned to Ice novel Chapter 122

Lillian pulled out her phone and saw it was a call from the office. She answered immediately.

Before she could say a word, a familiar yet distant voice came through. “Li, that’s not cool. I’m here to report for duty, but where are you?”

Hearing that voice, Lillian quickened her pace.

“Half an hour. Wait for me.”

With that, Lillian hung up, walked out of the villa into the courtyard, got into her own car, and drove off.

It was only today that the Mercer family realized Lillian drove a supercar worth over fifty million.

Colin’s jaw dropped. “My God, that car Lillian’s driving... Where did she get that kind of money?”

Martin scoffed. “Who else but Nathan? She used to rely on her father, then her husband Sebastian. Now she wants a divorce, rebels, and finds some rich guy on the outside. I don’t know who she takes after. I never realized she had it in her.”

Brandon cut in, “Dad, you should watch what you say to Lillian from now on. No matter how bad things get, we’re still family. You need her if you want to divorce Mom and marry Ms. Ward, don’t you?

Who else but Lillian can get the Lancaster family in Midvale to sign that agreement for you?

Unlike us, Lillian wasn’t raised to learn business.

When she was a kid, Mom would take her to our grandparents’ house in Midvale for summer and winter breaks.

She’s always been charming, and the Lancaster family elders have always thought the world of her.

If Sabrina hadn’t been making a fuss, it wouldn’t even be the right time to be discussing a divorce with Mom.”

For years, Brandon had actually opposed his parents’ divorce.

That was why Sabrina had been living with them for two years without any promise of marriage from Martin.

The reason Brandon was finally relenting was because Sebastian had secured the government project, and Bella had been appointed as its head.

Brandon saw a greater benefit in this new alliance and was willing to concede on the divorce.

By deeply binding Bella to the Mercer family, the Mercers could legitimately get a piece of the pie.

However, Brandon also started to see potential in Lillian.

Before, he had been impatient with her. He had thought that as her brother, what was good for the Mercer family would also benefit Lillian, but she had been ungrateful. So, he lost his patience.

But now, he found her a bit hard to read, so Brandon decided to be patient and see how things played out.

Martin grumbled, “What good is it if the Lancasters approve of her? The Lancaster family is nothing compared to what it used to be.”

“Dad, you can’t say that. Grandma’s family may not have much left, but their network is still intact. Aren’t you still using it?”

Martin was at a loss for words; his father’s point was valid. The network was still there.

It might come in handy one day.

Seeing no point in arguing, Martin dropped the subject and sent a message to Sabrina, letting her know the divorce proceedings were underway.

Victor shot back, “And you didn’t think I was some old geezer, did you?”

They looked at each other and laughed.

Lillian walked closer and held out her fist. Victor mirrored the gesture, and their knuckles bumped.

Then Victor plopped down in the chair opposite Lillian’s desk. “Alright, boss, lay it on me. I’m here to be your workhorse. As for my salary, just give me your account number later, and I’ll wire it over.”

Lillian sat down at her desk and chuckled. “Are you really going to pay to work here? You must have made a killing these past few years to be this bold. But if people find out the famous Mr. Knight is paying to work for me, won’t I get a ton of hate for it?”

“Cut it out. If people knew I was paying to work for *Li*, my own mother would be proud of me.”

Jokes aside, Lillian personally walked Victor through the onboarding process.

Victor looked at the employment contract Lillian handed him and scratched his head. “Do I really have to sign this?”

Lillian replied, “We’re a legitimate company. Just sign it. Don’t worry, I won’t shortchange you. I don’t mean in terms of money, I mean in terms of the work.”

Only after hearing that did Victor pick up the pen. “Now that’s a sincere offer. Alright, I’ll sign. I’ve made a lot of money over the years, but I haven’t felt like I was at the top of my game. This time, I think I can get that feeling back.”

An outsider might not understand. Other people negotiated salary, paid time off, and benefits.

They, however, negotiated whether the work itself would make them feel like a legend. They’d even pay for the privilege.

With Victor officially on board, the news exploded across the industry: the online legend, Victor, had joined Lillian’s company!
