With all the divorce papers in order, Martin couldn't wait another minute. He received them Sunday night and immediately had someone arrange for the first court appointment on Monday morning.
Because of Eleanor Lancaster's mental illness, they couldn't simply go to the civil affairs bureau; the divorce had to be finalized by a court decree.
Lillian was present. Anxious to get it over with, Martin had basically divided the assets according to their initial agreement, giving Eleanor half of their marital property.
In truth, Martin was perfectly willing to part with half the assets for Eleanor.
She was mentally ill, so any property in her name would eventually be passed down to their three children anyway.
Although Martin currently disliked Lillian, she was still his daughter. The idea that she would inherit a third of the assets he was now giving to Eleanor didn't bother him.
Martin hadn't tried any tricks with the finances, and when Lillian reviewed the list, she raised no objections.
As a result, the divorce process went very quickly.
There was no cooling-off period required. The moment the judge's decree was issued, Martin and Eleanor Lancaster's marriage was over.
The instant Martin received the decree, he couldn't wait to find Sabrina and share the good news.
Lillian watched him, his steps so light he almost broke into a jog as he headed for his car. She suddenly wondered, why did he ever marry her mother in the first place?
Was it because the Mercer family was in crisis back then, and he needed the financial support of a marriage alliance with the Lancaster family?
What was it about Sabrina that so captivated him?
What did her own mother lack?
In terms of looks, Eleanor Lancaster's beauty far surpassed Sabrina's.
Brandon and Colin knew exactly where their father was rushing off to. Seeing Lillian staring after the disappearing taillights, Brandon walked over.
"I guess we'll be celebrating Dad's wedding soon."
Lillian shot him a cold look. "You're of marrying age yourself. When can we expect to celebrate yours?"
"Lillian, stop being childish," Brandon said. "I don't know the exact situation with your company, but since you've managed to hire talented people, why not consider joining forces with our own family to build something bigger and stronger?
You know the Mercer Group has also ventured into the tech industry. If you came back and started your business within the family company, wouldn't it be more convenient?"
After his trip to Midvale, Brandon had seen Lillian's influence with the Lancaster family.
The Lancasters had considerable power. He might not have any sway with them, but Gregory Lancaster clearly approved of Lillian, even offering to provide capital whenever she needed it.
Brandon had thought it through. If he could get Lillian to start her venture within the Mercer Group, the Lancasters would be more inclined to help them, for Lillian's sake.
Lillian stared at Brandon, her eyes seeing right through him.
His calculations were so obvious they were practically slapping her in the face.
What a brilliant scheme.
"The only reason I haven't cut ties with the Mercer family yet is because the timing isn't right. It doesn't mean our relationship has improved.
