Lillian was always very respectful toward her elders.
Moreover, there was something indescribable about the man before her. He looked like someone who had achieved extraordinary success in his field.
“Stephen, who is this gentleman?” Lillian asked.
“This is Mr. Peregrine, one of Midvale’s most famous traditional physicians. He’s been practicing herbal medicine since he was old enough to hold a spoon.
“Let me tell you, Mr. Peregrine is incredibly hard to get ahold of.
“It was pure chance this time. Remember how I said you’ve been looking listless and drained lately? I told you I’d find a reliable traditional doctor for you.
“Well, here he is! Mr. Peregrine’s track record is verifiable. He’s amazing.”
Lillian didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. She hadn’t expected Stephen to show up with a traditional physician to examine her instead of for work.
Stephen continued, “Modern hospitals need all sorts of machines just to figure out what’s wrong. But Mr. Peregrine is different. He can tell everything just from your pulse.
“Girls like you are often prone to fatigue and poor circulation. A regular doctor would just prescribe some supplements or something to boost your energy.
“But those symptoms can have many different causes. Mr. Peregrine just has to feel your pulse, and he’ll know exactly what’s going on. He prescribes the perfect remedy—and oh, it might not even be medicine! It could be supplements, or a therapeutic diet, or something else. Anyway, he’s brilliant.
“Be a good girl and let Mr. Peregrine take a look at you, okay?”
Lillian knew her condition, and the Mercer family knew the gist of it. Leonard’s circle knew it best.
But she had never let her family back home know.
She was the only one left in her branch of the family. If they found out about her current health, that she was sick—and with such a serious illness—she couldn’t imagine how worried they would be.
Thinking about it, Lillian didn’t know what to say.
He could glean a lot just by looking at her from this distance.
So, Lillian wasn’t shocked at all.
But after Mr. Peregrine spoke, it was Stephen who was left completely stunned.
He just stood there, frozen, unable to process what he’d heard for a long moment.
Lillian had never wanted the Lancaster family to know about her health. She had hidden it so well, and now, the old man had revealed everything in a single sentence.
Stephen wanted to grab the old man by the collar and call him a quack, but deep down, he knew just how capable Mr. Peregrine was.
He wasn't a quack; on the contrary, he was a renowned and brilliant physician.
In fact, after he and his wife were told by a hospital that they were infertile, it was Mr. Peregrine’s miraculous touch that had allowed them to have a child of their own.
