When Martin’s car pulled up outside the Blake family estate, someone had already reported it to the head butler.
The butler came to inform Old Mr. Blake and his wife, who was puzzled.
“What’s going on? The Mercer family situation is in full swing. What time does Martin have to come here?”
Although Old Mr. Blake was no longer at the helm of the company, he was still kept informed about most business matters.
He smiled mysteriously. “He wouldn’t be here unless he needed something. What else would you expect?”
Mrs. Blake’s expression soured. “I never used to think Martin was so unreliable. Now that his mother is ill, I’m finally seeing what kind of person he truly is.
I wonder what his mother would think if she saw him today.
And to think, a man like that could raise a wonderful child like Lillian.”
Old Mr. Blake added, “If it weren’t for Lillian, I’d have him thrown out right now.”
After hearing this, Mrs. Blake said to the butler, “Let him in.”
After all, they still had some connection.
The butler went to deliver the message, and a short while later, Martin entered.
As expected, he wouldn't have come without a reason. After Martin began to speak, Mrs. Blake glanced at her husband.
On his way over, Martin had picked up a few toys that the store clerk recommended for a boy, though he had no idea if Noah would like them.
Handing the gift to the butler, Martin made a point of emphasizing his relationship with Noah.
“I’ve been so busy, I haven’t had a chance to come see Noah in a long time. How has he been lately? Mr. and Mrs. Blake, I happened to be in the neighborhood and thought I’d stop by to see Noah”
The implication in Old Mr. Blake’s words was clear: he was accusing Martin of not caring about his grandson.
And Martin really didn’t care that much. With so many other people doting on Noah, did his concern even matter?
However, since the old man had put it that way, Martin could only force a smile and say, “For one, I’ve been busy. And two, with my in-laws arranging things for Noah, I was very relieved.”
In-laws?
Hearing this term, Old Mr. Blake immediately held up a hand to stop him. “Martin, that’s a misunderstanding. I think that term should be changed now. It’s no longer appropriate to refer to us as ‘in-laws.’
The two children divorced long ago, so calling us that isn’t right.
Besides, didn’t you disown Lillian? In any case, we can no longer be considered in-laws.”
With that, Old Mr. Blake let out a loud laugh. “Hahaha… come to think of it, Noah isn’t even your grandson anymore. Well now, what can I say about this? You should take this gift back. It wouldn’t be appropriate for us to accept it.”
