Emilia remembered Bella excitedly telling her that the teacher was showing them how to make sugar cookies today.
Right on cue, Bella launched herself into the hallway like a tiny rocket.
"Emilia!"
Bella threw her arms around Emilia's legs, hugging her tight.
Emilia smiled, crouching down to gently cup Bella's soft, chubby cheeks.
"Hey, sweetie," she said softly.
Bella beamed, grabbed her hand, and began dragging her down the hall.
"Come with me, I have something to show you," Bella insisted, leading her straight into the small instructional kitchen.
Ingredients and bowls were scattered across the counters, evidence of the chaotic baking session that had just taken place.
Bella pulled her up to a small, flour-dusted table.
"I made these," Bella announced proudly, popping open a small pastry box.
Inside sat three sugar cookies, each clumsily decorated with piped icing.
The letters E, B, and T were shakily written across them.
Those three little cookies represented their family.
They were framed with colorful, messy swirls of frosting, looking absolutely beautiful in their imperfection.
"I messed up a bunch of times before I got them right," Bella admitted, her bright eyes looking up, silently begging for praise.
A lump formed in Emilia's throat.
All the heavy, suffocating emotions she had suppressed throughout the day suddenly came rushing to the surface.
She pulled Bella into her arms and pressed a long kiss to the girl's cheek.
"You did an amazing job. They're perfect," Emilia whispered, her voice thick with emotion.
Bella hugged her back, her little hands patting Emilia's waist.
