"But you clearly lost, yet you still linger around her. Why?" Chloe asked, unwilling to accept it.
"Have you still not given up on her?"
Raymond shot Chloe a look.
He considered his words carefully before finally answering, "It's not that I want to give up, but she chose Theodore. I have no choice but to step back."
Besides, she would never forgive him anyway, Raymond thought silently, taking another sip of his wine.
The warm living room lights cast deep shadows over his long lashes, giving his usually sharp features an air of brooding melancholy.
His quiet despondency made Chloe's heart ache for him, which only fueled her burning hatred for Emilia.
If Emilia hadn't been recklessly flirting with every man in sight, Raymond wouldn't be suffering like this!
"Chloe, stop targeting her," Raymond said, taking another slow sip. "There was never anything going on between us. From the very beginning, it was entirely one-sided on my part."
"She clearly led you on, stringing you along! It's not your fault!" Chloe argued instantly.
Raymond looked up, his gaze heavy with meaning.
The intensity of his stare made Chloe shift guiltily.
"You don't need to make excuses for me," Raymond said. "When you said you were coming over today, I decided it was time to clear the air."
"You're a great girl, but we just aren't a good match."
Chloe had been feeling defensive, but the moment he said that, panic seized her.
"Why aren't we a match?" Chloe practically begged. "Raymond, things were perfect between us in Cerulion. You were always so protective of me."
"Remember? You were the one who saved me in the beginning."
Chloe pushed forward, her words spilling out. "Later, when I was handling The Erickson Group's liaison work in Cerulion, you never made things difficult for me. You actively helped me. You treated me better than anyone else."
"Whenever I hit a wall, you were always there to fix it."
