But secretly, she was also happy. She had stopped Damian from attending Ashley's birthday party and clearly ruined whatever plans they might have had.
Damian's face darkened, a knot of frustration tightening in his chest.
Isabelle, however, wasn't going to fall for her trick. She leaned over to Aurora's ear, speaking just loud enough for all three to hear, her voice soft but clear.
"Oh, sweetie, don't even say that. Damian is in great shape. I was just so worn out that night. It's a good thing he finally came to check on you, otherwise I really wouldn't have been able to get up the next morning." Her sugary-sweet tone poured into Aurora's ear.
Even Isabelle's own cheeks flushed as she finished speaking. She steadied herself, picked up a spoon, and handed it over.
The color that had just returned to Aurora's face instantly drained away. She hadn't expected this seemingly meek and timid Isabelle to have such a backbone!
Beside them, Damian tugged at his tie, undid the top button of his shirt, his Adam's apple bobbing violently.
It was nothing like last night when he'd asked her how it was and she'd stubbornly bitten her lip, refusing to make a sound. Now, in front of others, she was singing his praises without restraint...
It suddenly made him want to...
Aurora drank her soup. Damian ate his meal. Isabelle walked out of the room alone and sat on a bench in the hallway, looking at her phone.
After a while, Damian came out carrying his finished meal. "You're cute when you're jealous," he said.
Isabelle shot back, "I'm not jealous."
"Then I'm a little disappointed."
Isabelle was speechless.
So you find your words now?
"Alaric is back tomorrow. I won't be handling her matters anymore," Damian said.
"Yeah, I know. You said that many times last night," Isabelle replied flatly.
Damian nodded. Watching her ambiguous expression, he couldn't tell if she was actually jealous or if she really didn't care.
"I kind of wish you would get a little jealous," he muttered, almost to himself.
Isabelle turned her head to look at him, her expression serious. "Are you saying you want to flirt around so I have something to be jealous about?"
Damian said, "That's not it..."
"Mr. Cross, maybe watch less reality TV," Isabelle said, rolling her eyes.
Damian lowered his gaze and quietly finished his food. He'd been scolded, but somehow, it felt good. A faint smile touched his lips.
Sometimes, he really couldn't figure her out.
When they were alone, she was shy and timid. But when crossed, she was a force of nature, meeting toughness with toughness.
Isabelle and Damian seemed to catch the unspoken implication in her words. Was Ashley deliberately invited here just to cause trouble?
Aurora probably wanted to see Isabelle and Ashley get into a fight, to watch Isabelle lose her temper. Would that make her feel better? What a move!
Isabelle started to bend down to pick it up, but Damian was faster. He grabbed a clean tissue, used it to pick up the dirty one, and tossed it properly into the bin. Then he gave Aurora a look that held a clear, unspoken warning.
Aurora dropped her little act, pretending not to have noticed, and turned to Ashley. "Thanks. Good thing you're here to see me. I'd have thought you came specifically to see Dami."
"I see Damian at work every day. If I wanted to see him, I wouldn't need to come to a hospital," Ashley replied calmly, unfazed by the provocation.
Isabelle glanced almost imperceptibly at Damian beside her.
Damian's face was stony. Feels like she's just here for the drama, not treating me like her husband at all.
Aurora wasn't satisfied. She really wanted to stir up some trouble, to sit back and reap the benefits.
But Damian had also sternly told her that Isabelle's identity wasn't to be made public yet.
She didn't dare disobey Damian, but she couldn't stand seeing other women around him either. She also wanted to make Isabelle angry, hoping she'd go back and take it out on Damian.
"Are you done? If you're done, you can leave," Aurora said.
"I'm done. I just wanted to ask, how is it that every time it's my birthday, you have a sudden 'heart episode'?" Ashley let out a derisive snort and continued, her tone laced with scorn. "People in the know might think your precious heart can't take the excitement. Those who don't would think you're deliberately keeping Damian by your side, stopping him from seeing other women."
"Ashley." Damian's voice held a clear warning.
He could hear what Ashley was implying, and he knew Aurora was perfectly capable of pulling a stunt like that.
