She glanced at the trash can and spotted last night’s cappuccino cup, straw still in it. “Did you drink that last night?”
“Yeah. I drank it. It wasn’t good,” Damian said, getting up to gather their things.
Isabelle shot him a look, clicking her tongue in silent disapproval.
Not good, but you finished it anyway.
Once they’d packed up and completed the discharge paperwork, the two were ready to leave the hospital.
Just as they were about to go, they ran into Sean in the hallway. Seeing Damian holding Isabelle’s hand, Sean fixed a sharp, unfriendly stare on her.
Isabelle could tell the look wasn’t welcoming.
Maybe it’s my imagination, but their attitude seems completely different from yesterday’s. Or maybe they’ve just stopped pretending.
Through the open door, she could see Celeste, makeup–free, propped up in bed, her face pale. Her hands tightened slightly on the sheets when she saw Isabelle.
Keira didn’t even look her way, shooting a glare instead.
Damian’s face showed no expression, though his brow furrowed a little when his eyes landed on Celeste.
“Good morning,” Isabelle said, sensing the tension in the air. She planned to just say that and leave.
But Sean let out a mocking laugh. “Ms. Foster, do we look like we’re doing well?”
His expression made it clear he was mocking.
He was about to say more when Keira nudged his arm, signaling him to stop.
Isabelle wanted to say something comforting, but Damian clearly didn’t want her to speak.
Damian pulled her hand gently, shifting her slightly behind him, shielding her at his side. “Mr. Snow, we have things to attend to. We won’t disturb Ms. Snow’s rest any further.”
Celeste watched the protective gesture, a glimmer of moisture appearing in her eyes.
Yesterday, he called me Celeste. Why is it “Ms. Snow” again today?
Damian gave Isabelle’s hand a light squeeze and turned to leave. Suddenly, Sean grabbed a nearby flower arrangement and hurled it at the back of Isabelle’s head.
Damian reacted instantly. He threw up an arm, pivoting to shield Isabelle with his body. Isabelle flinched, closing her eyes and raising her hands defensively over her head.
“Dad!” Celeste cried out, trying to stop him, but her injury kept her pinned to the bed. She could only watch
The vase struck Damian’s back. Vibrant petals broke from their stems and scattered across the floor.

Damian kept his body between Isabelle and the threat, pushing her further aside in case of anothe
The flowers weren’t exactly a weapon, but Isabelle knew something serious was going on.
She looked up at the man protecting her.
Damian’s brow was still tightly knit. “It’s okay. Don’t worry about it.”
“None of you is leaving today,” Sean snarled, the muscles in his jaw working tightly.
“What happened?” Isabelle stopped, needing to understand.
Two intimidating–looking bodyguards now blocked the doorway, preventing anyone from entering or leaving–clearly not Damian’s men.
“Ms. Foster, stop playing innocent,” Sean spat, flecks of spittle flying in his anger. “Celeste’s injured leg was no threat to you. Even if Damian saved her and carried her out, that’s what any decent man would do. If it bothered you, you could have said so. There was no need to try to kill her by blowing up her entire house! Did that satisfy you?”
“Her house exploded?” Isabelle looked from Damian to Celeste.
No wonder Damian tried to stop me from visiting. If I hadn’t come, I wouldn’t have known I was almost framed as the culprit.
Celeste’s gaze remained fixed on Damian, watching him protect Isabelle.
Damian glanced at the shattered flowers on the floor, his arm still firmly around Isabelle’s shoulders.
“There was a gas explosion at the villa after we came to the hospital. The initial finding is a stove. The police are still investigating. It has nothing to do with you. Don’t think about it,” he said softly, trying to reassure her.
Isabelle was stunned for a second.
