Their wedding photos were hurriedly taken, and Lucas appeared as if he had been compelled to marry into his wife’s family.
The photos were taken, the whole process like an assembly line. When Lynn picked the shots, she wished the retoucher could give him a different expression.
Now, though, he seemed to be apologizing.
Lynn pressed her lips together and replied, “Acceptable, I suppose.”
Lucas replied, “Please spare me.”
He was even more afraid now that Lynn would settle accounts with him later. Otherwise, he’d be sleeping in the study again.
When Lynn arrived at the courtyard, there was again trash piled at the entrance.
She didn’t complain. She picked up a broom and cleaned it herself.
An old man passing by glanced at her, expressionless, staring straight at her.
Lynn noticed him too.
From his look, it was clear he was the one who’d done it.
When she’d filed a complaint with the community, they’d pulled the surveillance footage. The man in the video was him.
Joseph, who had just arrived, saw all this.
“You can hire someone to do that. No need to do it yourself.”
Lynn glanced at him, smiled, and shook her head. “I can’t hire someone every day, can I?”
Joseph didn’t argue. He quietly picked up another broom and cleaned with her.
The old man sat under the old tree at the entrance of the courtyard.
A few other old men were playing chess under the tree.
“Leonard, it’s been so many years. You should let it go,” one of the chess players said, patting his shoulder.
The old man called Leonard said nothing. He glanced at Lynn, and then walked away disdainfully.
Lynn and Joseph swept the floor clean, rinsed it with water, and scrubbed it again. It was nearly noon by the time they finished.
“I’m heading back. Call me if you need anything.” Joseph put away the tools and prepared to leave.

Lynn stopped him. “Not staying for lunch?”
Joseph said, “No need.”
Lucas would be coming soon anyway.
He definitely would.
Lynn nodded. “All right.”

Joseph had probably been coming by every day these past few days. Otherwise there would have been more than just this much trash at the entrance.
Lucas also had people keep an eye on the place. Though he didn’t chase Leonard away, he always had someone clean up promptly.
Lynn took off her jacket, put it on the rocking chair in the yard, and began arranging the courtyard’s furnishings.
Before she and Lucas left for Engster, she’d already hired a renovation company to build the medicine cabinets and do some simple work. The herbal medicine shop was starting to take shape.
Joseph had just left when Lucas arrived.
He brought lunch.
There were still workers in the yard, so they ate in the backyard.
Lynn was starving. She ate without any pretense of manners.
Lucas tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and watched her eat unhurriedly.
“Did someone upset you again today?”
When he’d arrived, he saw the entrance had been cleaned. Though air freshener had been sprayed and the area scrubbed with disinfectant, there was still a faint odor.
Lynn shook her head. “I understand why they do it.”
Ruben’s “work” had indeed been shameful. It wasn’t just Leonard, there were probably more people she didn’t know about who were hurting because of it.
Lynn had also looked into Leonard. His wife was gone. He had a son and a daughter. The daughter had been lured to Fayland by a man.
She’d heard that the daughter now did business outside Fayland, but she rarely came home. When asked what business, she stammered. Sometimes when she called, the conversation was timed, and she sounded like someone was watching over her.
Naturally, Leonard could guess what kind of business she was in.

Leonard hadn’t originally known about Ruben. He’d only found out that day when the old lady threw eggs at Lynn.
He hated people like that, and he had no goodwill toward Lynn.
The clinic didn’t have an opening ceremony. Instead, Lynn offered a week of free consultations.
Strangely, Leonard hadn’t shown up to cause trouble these past few days.
And miraculously, there was no trash at the entrance.
Lynn found it odd, but figured it was a good thing.
That day, people started arriving one after another.
The clinic had hired an older male practitioner recommended by Taylor, along with two young female
nurses.
They set up a table outside the clinic for free consultations.
Lynn was examining Isabelle’s body.
Lucas and Damian were chatting nearby.
“You’re about to give birth! How does it feel?” Lynn asked curiously.
“You’ll know when you get pregnant,” Isabelle laughed. “You’ve finally got your wish fulfilled.”
“Who’s been waiting?” Lynn pressed her lips together and snuck a glance at Lucas.
Her eyes met his just as he looked over.
Having a child still seemed far away for her. But Lucas would turn thirty–one after his birthday. If they waited much longer, their age would start showing.
“Your little one is very active,” Lynn changed the subject. “But don’t eat too much. It’s not good if the baby gets too big.”
Isabelle nodded, having received similar advice during a recent checkup.
