She tried to pull away, but he wouldn’t let her. She tried to speak, but he kissed her until she went soft in his arms, not giving her a second to breathe.
Anthony yanked at his tie and kept kissing her as he’d never let go.
When he’d seen Daisy’s message, the want he’d been holding back for so long had finally snapped.
He wanted to tell her how he felt.
But the words wouldn’t come.
He’d always thought that by thirty, talking about love was kind of tacky.
But now? He was happy to be tacky.
Daisy felt his hands moving and pounded on his chest.
Oh no.
If this kept up, everyone inside would be stuck here all night.
She was going to die of embarrassment.
Anthony loosened his belt and kissed her more deeply.
Daisy bit his lip hard.
He hissed.
She’d drawn blood. A tiny bead of it welled up at the corner of his mouth.
Daisy grabbed his arms, holding him back. If she didn’t stop him now, everyone hiding in the other rooms wouldn’t dare come out.
Anthony frowned, looking at the space between them. Sadness flickered across his face. She said she didn’t mind.
Seeing how upset he looked, Daisy didn’t care about anything else. “Mr. Vale, did you get the earrings?” Her voice came out in a stammer.
Anthony took a breath. He looked down at his crooked tie, at the two undone buttons on his shirt. Shame washed over him.
“I got them.” His voice was low, still rough.

Lynn and Lucas set off party poppers from their hiding spot. From inside the room, a chorus of Happy Birthday drifted out.
Before Daisy could react, Anthony grabbed her and crushed her against his chest, his hand cradling her head, holding her tight.
“I’m here!”
He was holding her so hard that Daisy thought he might break her ribs.
She lifted her head from his chest and saw the panic in his eyes.
His arms were still tightening around her. Who would have thought he could shake like a leaf?
His whole body was rigid, on high alert. His heart was hammering so fast she could feel it.
Something was wrong.
Thomas had told her he had triggers.
Every year at Christmas, he locked himself in his room, windows and doors sealed tight. No one knew why.
Then one year, after the holidays, he’d been driving through a village. Someone had set off wedding firecrackers by the roadside. He’d nearly crashed.
That was when Thomas had figured it out.
Now Thomas always kept a close eye on him whenever they went out.
Daisy touched his face, her heart breaking because she didn’t know how to help. “Mr. Vale, look at me…”
Streamers from the party poppers drifted through the air, landing on his hair, his shoulders.
He wasn’t back yet. His mind was still trapped in that war, on that peacekeeping mission.
Every moment of it played out in his head like a storm that wouldn’t pass.
Lucas saw what was happening. He waved Lynn back, signaling her to stay away.
No one had known Anthony had triggers like this.
They’d all thought the scar on his face was the worst of it.
Damian pushed the cake out, the others singing behind him. None of them had seen what had just happened.
Daisy cupped Anthony’s face in her hands. “Honey…”

Anthony blinked. He looked at her. The weight on his chest lifted.
“Honey.” Daisy stroked his cheek.
Slowly, his head lowered. His expression softened. “What did you call me?”
Daisy saw him come back. Her face went crimson. “Honey.”
Anthony swallowed hard.
The birthday song faded. Daisy quickly straightened his clothes. She snuck a glance downward.

Good. It had gone down. And his belt was still on. Otherwise, she would have shoved him right out the door.
Aurora placed a birthday hat on his head.
“Happy birthday, Anthony!”
Anthony looked around at everyone.
Daisy squeezed his hand. She was more nervous than he was. “Make a wish?”
He hesitated. She pulled him toward the cake.
Lucas and Lynn finally relaxed. Thank God Daisy had brought him back with those honeys.
That was close.
They’d been hiding nearby. They couldn’t see exactly what Anthony had been doing to Daisy, but they had a pretty good idea.
Daisy was supposed to signal with the earrings. Lynn and Lucas would set off the poppers. Then the cake would come out.
No one had expected Anthony to give Daisy zero chance to react.
Anthony made a wish. Daisy held his hand and cut the cake with him.
They’d pulled it off.
But Daisy felt like she’d scared him.
Everyone ate cake and played with the babies. Anthony sat off to the side, watching.
Daisy chatted with Lynn for a bit, then went over and sat beside him.
Anthony turned to her. “Did I scare you?”
“No.” She shook her head.
