“No, it’s okay…” She shook her head and pulled the pillow closer. “Not right now.”

Harold smiled faintly to himself, cleared the dishes from the table, and loaded them into the dishwasher.

“Go wait in the bedroom. The master,” he told her.

Claudia quickly got up and headed into the inner room.

Leaning back against the door, she let out a long breath, trying to calm her nerves. But the more she tried to relax, the more uneasy she felt.

She swallowed hard and glanced at the gray–toned bed. After a moment, she lay down, slipped out of her clothes, turned onto her stomach, and pulled the covers up, settling in for what felt like a long wait.

“Knock, knock, knock-”

Three taps sounded at the door.

“Ready?” he asked from outside.

“Yes,” Claudia answered, squeezing her eyes shut. Her fingers twisted tightly into the sheets beneath her.

Instead of entering, Harold turned and walked away–his footsteps fading down the hall. He made his way to the front door and opened it.

A female doctor who had been waiting outside stepped in, pulling on disposable shoe covers before following him inside.

Harold hadn’t dared to apply the ointment himself. If he had, he’d probably have ended up stuck beside her for an hour or two–and worse, he might’ve caused a different kind of trouble altogether.

That wouldn’t have been good.

When Claudia saw it was a woman doctor, her tension melted away entirely.

Right then, her impression of Harold shifted. All those worries she’d carried seemed to dissolve like mist.

Maybe he really was a decent guy after all.

Her opinion of him rose noticeably.

What she didn’t know was that Harold wasn’t decent at all.

The doctor tended to the cuts on her arm and knee first, then moved to the ones on her back. Claudia didn’t even realize when she drifted off to sleep.

By the time the doctor left, Claudia was out cold. Harold walked into the room sometime later.

He stood beside the bed, watching her for a long while. A slow, restless heat began to stir low in his stomach. With one hand, he undid the top two buttons of his shirt.

He drew in a quiet, controlled breath. His gaze turned hazy, darkened by something unspoken.

There, upon his gray sheets, lay a woman, paleskinned and silken as ivory.

He wondered whether she’d refuse him if he pulled back the covers and climbed in right then.

Setting a small bag down on the nightstand, he forced himself to turn and walk out.

Claudia woke around six in the evening.

For a second, she almost bolted upright–she was in the master bedroom. In his bed.

Then she noticed the new phone on the nightstand, and that familiar bag lying beside it.

Letting out a slow breath, she picked up the phone. Harold had already installed all the usual apps for her. He’d also sent her a WhatsApp message.

“There’s an elevator keycard by the entrance. Take it down to the private dining room for dinner—just give them your name. You’ll be staying here from today. Megan will bring your luggage over tomorrow.”

He didn’t mention whether he was coming back tonight.

Claudia changed into the dress he’d left for her, then took a look around the penthouse.

There were three guest rooms, each fully furnished, but the beds were bare–only mattresses, no sheets or comforters. She checked the closets: not a single spare set in sight.

So where was she supposed to sleep? With him?

One problem after another.

Gathering her nerve, she texted him, “Mr. Cross, where should I sleep?”

Harold replied, “The bed.”

Well, obviously the bed. Was she supposed to take the floor?

She was still figuring out how to ask more politely when another message came through.

“You take the master. Lock the door at night.”

She felt her cheeks warm.

Just as she finished texting him, her phone rang–Sebastian was calling.

She hesitated a few seconds before answering.

“Ms. Bowman, are you all right?”

Claudia paused. “Mr. Vale.”

“I saw you at the police station earlier. How about dinner tonight? We can talk then,” Sebastian said.

She thought it over. “Meet me at Serene Manor.”

Then she hung up.

When she went downstairs, a server was waiting near the elevator.

“Mrs. Cross, would you like to have dinner now?” the server asked with a polite smile.

“Yes, that works.”

Claudia still wasn’t used to the title–they didn’t even use “Ms. Bowman” anymore, just “Mrs. Cross“. It was as if they knew her role better than she did.

The server led her to a private dining room. She didn’t order anything extra; Harold had already pre- ordered plenty for her–enough for two, in fact.

Right after the food arrived, Sebastian appeared at the door, using the room number she’d given him.

Claudia stood up. “Mr. Vale.”

“Ms. Bowman.”

They shook hands and sat down together.

Before Claudia could even speak, Sebastian asked, “Did you run into some kind of trouble today, too?”

Too? Why “too“?

Seeing her confused expression, Sebastian understood immediately.

A cold smile touched his lips. “I have a will Graham left behind. It’s meant for you. The Bowmans are trying to take it. Jaden found out yesterday that you came to see me. He tried to stir up trouble for you and get the will away from me. Before he left, he filed a false report claiming you’re mentally unstable.”

Claudia was completely stunned.

Her grandfather had left her something–and she’d known nothing about it.

If it hadn’t been for that message from a stranger, Edgar and the others would have taken everything for themselves.
