Katrina wiped her lips, thinking over what Claudia had just said. Chelsea would have to wait–this was more important.
“What did you mean about being locked up by Darrell and the Bowmans? And why did you block me because of it?”
She’d spent over a month worried sick, only to find out Claudia had made herself impossible to reach on purpose. It pissed her off.
Chelsea frowned deeply. She’d received the wedding invitation from Claudia and Darrell while she was vacationing overseas. Now there was talk of imprisonment? What was going on?
Claudia swallowed, suddenly realizing she might have misread Katrina completely.
“Let’s talk in the car. I’m starving–we can argue after we eat,” she said, trying to lighten the mood.
Katrina dismissed her driver, and the two climbed into Claudia’s SUV.
Once they were moving, Claudia laid everything out–step by step.
But she carefully left out what happened at the estate. It felt too heavy, too complicated to put into words just yet.
By the time she finished, a tense silence filled the car. Both of them felt a slow, creeping chill.
Hearing the full story, Katrina’s anger about being blocked began to fade.
“Wait, something doesn’t make sense. Darrell was crazy about you. I heard your phone broke, and that same night–after some corporate dinner–he went out of his way to pick a new one out for you,” Katrina insisted, totally serious. “He even spent a fortune remodeling that wedding house. It was seriously luxurious.”
A cold shiver ran down Chelsea’s spine. “What if it was just the Bowmans trying to trap you, and Darrell didn’t even know?”
Claudia glanced up just as the traffic light turned red. She hit the brakes a little harder than necessary, sending both passengers lurching forward against their seatbelts.
The same thought had crossed her mind more than once.
For a moment, all three of them sat there, unsettled.
“But he cheated,” Claudia said, frowning.
Once a guy crosses that line, there’s no going back.
“What if it was just an ex?” Chelsea suggested carefully. “I mean, nowadays, who hasn’t dated someone before? Marrying someone like Darrell–successful, wealthy–sure beats ending up with some military guy you only see once in a blue moon.”

Claudia didn’t have the heart to say it out loud. Their arrangement would probably end in a quiet divorce after next month anyway.
“Or maybe,” Katrina cut in with a playful smirk, “your new husband is even hotter than Darrell?”
Claudia’s face flushed bright red instantly.
She didn’t really know how Harold stacked up physically. He always wore long sleeves when she saw him except that very first time in the yard.
His chest was solid, his build muscular and strong… Definitely more impressive than Darrell’s lean frame.
Now that she thought about it, there really wasn’t any clear proof that Darrell had been involved in locking her up. They were weeks away from getting married–why go through all that trouble?
And the cheating video… the timestamp was missing. It could’ve been from before they were even serious.
She eased the car forward as the light turned green, her mind suddenly tangled with doubts.
Had she been wrong about Darrell too?
They parked in the mall’s underground garage and took the elevator up to the rooftop fondue restaurant.
Chelsea had been craving hot pot ever since returning from two months abroad, and this place was her top pick.
“So, is he hot? Like, actually?” Katrina asked as she swirled a piece of tripe in the bubbling broth.
Claudia’s cheeks were still warm, and now they turned even redder. “He’s attractive, yeah. But we haven’t… you know.”
“What?” Katrina looked genuinely surprised. “You don’t think he’s gay, do you?”
Chelsea was too busy devouring slice after slice of beef to jump in–Katrina was asking all the questions
anyway.
“I don’t think so. He’s just… really busy. Hardly ever comes home,” Claudia replied, though it sounded like an excuse even to her.
Otherwise, why would he sleep in the guest room every time?
“You’re usually so good with information,” Katrina said, a little annoyed. “How come you didn’t figure out I wasn’t one of them? Some guy tells you to play along and you just do it? You met twice and then signed a marriage license.”
“To be fair,” Chelsea mumbled between bites, “if it weren’t for that guy, Claudia might be in jail right now.”

“Married is married,” Claudia sighed. “It’s fine this way–we both do our own thing. In a while, we’ll get a divorce and I’ll be single again.” She was almost trying to convince herself.
“Then you’ll be a divorcée,” Katrina reminded her bluntly.
“Yeah, I guess so.” But at least she was free, and alive. That was what mattered.
With that, Claudia finally dug into the fondue spread in front of her.
Then a memory surfaced–something Lowell had mentioned at the hospital while chatting with a nurse. “There was this girl who wouldn’t stop talking about her sprained ankle, like I was hard of hearing or something.”
That had to be Katrina.
How had she not realized it back then?
“Katrina,” Claudia said, guilt heavy in her voice. “I’m really sorry.”
Katrina shot her a look. “Add me back on WhatsApp right now, seriously. You had me worried to death. Even if you were gonna drop off the face of the earth, you could’ve sent a sign!”
“I’m sorry, I really am…” Claudia had already unblocked her earlier when they got into the car, but the guilt kept swelling.
Thank God Katrina wasn’t like the others.
But what about Darrell? Was it possible he wasn’t involved after all?
She took a slow sip of iced juice.
Things had already come this far–she’d just take it one day at a time and wait to see what Harold wanted
next.
