Harvey spoke to Isabelle with deliberate seriousness. “My brother meant well–he actually thought this through more carefully than I did. So, none of you should feel like I got the short end of the stick. She saved my life too. No matter who she ends up with, I’ll always look out for her. Right now, what matters most is protecting her reputation.”

When Harold left Cross Villa, he was carrying a wooden box from his brother–inside lay a wedding agreement with Claudia.

Just outside, his phone rang. It was Henrietta.

“Hey, Harvey, are you home? Can you come pick us up?” Her voice sounded strained, like something was

wrong.

She’d gone out with Dolores again today.

Harvey’s brow furrowed. “Where are you?”

“At the police station,” Henrietta replied quietly.

“Stay put. I’m on my way.” Harvey hung up and headed straight to the precinct.

When he arrived, he found Henrietta and Dolores sitting side by side on a bench, hands on their knees like two kids who’d been caught misbehaving. A man in his mid–twenties was with them.

Harvey recognized him–Carson Baker, Dolores‘ fiancé. They’d gotten engaged just a few days earlier, and Harvey had seen their engagement announcement in the paper. The guy in the photo was definitely this

one.

Harvey’s expression tightened.

Henrietta spotted him first. “Harvey!”

Dolores glanced up meekly. “Hey, Harvey.”

Beside them, Carson studied the man in the tailored suit. Harvey had the same build as his father, Damian -the same broad shoulders, the same presence.

Harvey stood with one hand in his pocket, his assistant a step behind him. The moment he walked into the room, the air seemed to shift.

An officer politely pulled Harvey aside to explain the situation.

Here was what had happened.

Carson had been celebrating his bachelor party at a bar. After a few rounds, someone had called Dolores to come pick him up.

She’d been about to take him home when one of Carson’s buddies started getting handsy with a woman named Jessica Wade, Carson had grabbed a bottle and smashed it over the guy’s head.

The victim was still in the hospital. Jessica, shaken up, had already been sent home.

Jessica happened to be an old college friend of Dolores‘–they were close. Dolores had no idea why Jessica was even at Carson’s bachelor party.

“Carson isn’t being straight with us,” the officer told Harvey quietly. “He’s the one who swung the bottle, but he keeps saying Ms. Buchanan did it. The victim was too out of it to see clearly, and since he heard Carson say her name, he pointed the finger at her. So all three of them got brought in.”

Harvey’s eyes shifted to Dolores. Henrietta had wrapped both arms around her, clinging tight.

After a brief word with the officer, Dolores and Henrietta were cleared to leave.

Carson stood up from the cold metal chair, ready to follow them out, but an officer stopped him.

“Not you. You’re staying.”

“What? I didn’t hit anyone!” Carson lied, his voice tense.

Dolores looked back at him, then at Harvey, her eyes pleading.

Henrietta buried her face in Harvey’s chest. “Harvey…”

Harvey gave her a pat on the head, then nodded to his assistant. “Take them to the car.”

“Right away, sir.”

Henrietta hurried out with the assistant.

“Harvey,” Dolores said, stopping him. “Can you…?”

Her eyes were glistening. Harvey followed her gaze to Carson.

Carson took a step forward and tried for a friendly smile. “Mr. Cross, I—”

Harvey’s face was ice. “I don’t know him.”

Carson’s smile vanished.

The officer guided him firmly back to the chair. “Sit down.”

Dolores wiped her eyes, panic rising. “Can you help get him out, too?”

“No.” Without another word, Harvey turned and walked away.

Dolores glanced once more toward Carson.

But Harvey had only taken a few steps when he paused. He seemed to reconsider for a moment, then turned back, walked over to Dolores, and took her by the wrist, leading her firmly out of the station.

“Harvey, wait-” Dolores stumbled slightly as she kept up.

Harvey didn’t stop until they reached the car. Henrietta flinched when she saw them–Harvey was angry. Really angry. She’d never seen him like this in her whole life. They were definitely in deep trouble.

Harvey helped Dolores into the back seat, then turned and walked right back into the precincy.

He strode straight up to Carson and, without warning, slammed a fist into his face.

Carson had actually thought Harvey was coming back to get him released. After all, the Cross family had influence in Nevaske. One word from Harvey, and he’d be walking out free.

He never expected the punch. It came out of nowhere, knocking him clean off his feet and onto the floor

Carson lay there, dazed and hurting, unable to get up.

The nearby officer casually looked the other way, pretending not to see a thing.

Harvey crouched down, rested one arm on his knee, and grabbed Carson’s collar with his other hand. He gave Carson’s cheek a light, taunting pat.

“You’re pathetic.”

Carson stared up, eyes wide with fear.

Harvey released his collar, glanced toward the officer, and said coolly, “Handle him by the book.”
