Just then, Darren’s phone rang. He nudged Harold on the arm and signaled for him to keep an eye on
Zander.
Harold gave a quick nod and took a seat beside the boy.
Zander was chatting away excitedly, but Harold wasn’t really listening–his mind was elsewhere.
Keith walked over and sat down on Zander’s other side. “Hey, sweetie,” she said with a bright tone, “how about I take you to see the fluffy bunnies outside?”
Zander glanced at her, hesitating. Something about her seemed to put him off. He scooted closer to Harold and turned his shoulder toward Keith, ignoring her completely.
Keith’s smile stiffened awkwardly.
Harold caught her expression and gently patted Zander’s head.
Molly came over next, eager to join in. “Can I pick you up, cutie? They’ve got cotton candy and cupcakes downstairs–want to go try some?”
She’d spent half the night before complaining to Brian about how he was always interfering in her love life, especially when it came to Harvey. Eventually, the conversation had turned to Harold–and now here he was, with a kid in tow.
Harold gave Zander’s cheek a soft pinch. “You can go, but don’t eat too much sugar, alright?”
“Yes! I wanna go!” Zander broke into a grin, and as soon as he got the okay, Molly led him downstairs by the hand.
“Molly, watch him closely–don’t let him wander off alone,” Harold called after her, his tone leaving no room for carelessness.
“I got it, I got it!” she replied, sounding slightly annoyed.
Harold’s eyes flicked to the small safety pendant hanging around Zander’s neck–a tracker he’d put on him the day before.
“I’m serious,” Harold added casually, “if he so much as loses a hair, I’m pulling one of your tendons.”
Molly clicked her tongue but didn’t reply. Harold had never laid a hand on her, but she’d seen what he was capable of. Back when he transferred schools, he’d beaten another kid so badly the boy ended up hospitalized. She’d been standing right there when it happened.
Later, a classmate asked, “You know that guy? The smart one?” More like the terrifying one. She’d shaken her head quickly. “Never met him.”
Meanwhile, Claudia and Lysandre had been deep in conversation for a while. Lysandre eventually invited

her out to dinner.
Claudia politely declined. “Sorry, I already have plans for tonight.”
“You know, Claudia,” Lysandre said with a light laugh, “you’ve changed. You’re way more talkative today- what’s going on? Could it be… you’re seeing someone?”
“Not even close,” Claudia answered, pressing her lips together to hide a faint smile. An image of Harold flashed through her mind.
“Alright, alright, I’m just teasing,” Lysandre said. “I’ll have my assistant reach out to Mr. Kingston later. I didn’t just come here to expand the business–I wanted to see you, too.” She shifted slightly in her saddle, looking over at Claudia. “You should really partner up with me. You handle operations, I’ll handle outreach. Between the two of us, we might not become the richest people alive, but we’d definitely make it pretty high up there.”
Claudia shook her head. “I’m happy where I am.”
Lysandre sighed. “Fine. I was never able to talk you into anything anyway.”
As they spoke, a sudden, sharp whinny pierced the air from the adjacent riding area.
They turned to look.
Keith was on horseback, but the animal was clearly spooked–dashing wildly across the field, out of control.
And over the sound of hooves and the horse’s cries, Claudia heard another, more familiar voice screaming.
It was Zander.
Keith was holding him in front of her on the saddle.
The boy was clinging to the pommel for dear life, his terrified shrieks rising above the chaos.
Up in the second–floor lounge, Harold heard it too.
Molly was nearby, shouting, “Keith! Come back!”
But Keith’s horse was beyond listening–reins loose, racing without direction, with two panicked riders on its back.
Zander was hysterical with fear.
The moment Harold registered the screams, he vaulted over the lounge railing, slid down the support beam alongside the building, and dropped to the ground below.
Down on the field, Claudia didn’t wait to hear what Lysandre was saying. She immediately wheeled her horse around and galloped straight toward the runaway horse.
Slinging her riding crop over her shoulder, she leaned low against her horse’s neck and cleared the low

fence separating the fields.
Lysandre followed right behind, pushing his own horse forward.

Harold, now on the ground, spotted a stable hand leading a freshly saddled horse nearby. In one fluid motion, he leaped onto its back and tore across the field toward Zander.
Keith, unable to handle the horse’s violent bucking, lost her grip and was thrown from the saddle- narrowly avoiding being trampled.
She lay shaken on the grass, paralyzed with fear.

But Zander was still on the horse, clutching the saddle with all his might.
uncontrolled
For some reason, the horse slowed its frenzy slightly, but it was still bolting in panicked, uncontrolled circles.
Zander’s cries grew louder, raw with terror.
Claudia’s horse was gaining fast, but she hadn’t expected Keith to fall. At the last second, she guided her mount to jump clear over Keith’s sprawled form.
To Keith, it felt like death had just swept over her and passed by.
Within moments, Claudia drew up alongside the runaway horse.
“Zander!” she called out, her voice firm but calm.
The boy was frozen, his knuckles white where he gripped the leather. When he saw Claudia, his fear broke into loud, heaving sobs. “Mommy…!”
Claudia steadied her horse and reached across, trying to pull Zander toward her–but his horse swerved abruptly, nearly throwing her off balance. She had to pull back.
“Claudia, this is too dangerous!” Lysandre shouted from behind. He was a decent rider, but not as skilled as Claudia, and was falling behind.
Then, from the rear, Harold came galloping up. As he passed Lysandre, he leaned over and smoothly snatched the riding crop right out of his hand.
Lysandre gasped in surprise, but Harold was already surging ahead.
Claudia pushed the thought aside–if this horse broke into the next field, Zander would be in even greater danger.
She urged her horse forward once more, drawing alongside the runaway. Then, leaning her whole body across the far side of her saddle, one hand anchored to the pommel, she stretched her free arm out toward the boy.
