He had just seen Darren and a few workers downstairs hanging up pieces of calligraphy. And every one of those pieces was by Ludi.
He’d seen some of her work before–at Harold’s place. The piece Claudia had given Harold, “Virtue Reaps Reward,” that was Ludi’s too.
Her artwork was nearly impossible to get your hands on.
Yet here was Southhall Compound, replacing all of old decorations with Ludi’s originals. Weren’t they worried about theft?
Just then, Harold’s call came through.
Claudia glanced at her phone, Nora caught the signal and stepped out, heading to the balcony to keep Zander company.
“Harold.” Claudia still struggled with the name–she’d almost said Mr. Cross again.
It just felt… strange.
“Claudy.” Harold’s voice came through, deep and steady. “You done for the day?”
He’d called her Claudy.

Probably something her grandfather Graham used to call her when she was little. Harold must have remembered.
“Not yet.”
“Where are you?”
Claudia’s eyes drifted toward Zander. Nora and Roger stood quietly on either side, not saying a word.
She looked away. “Still at Southhall Compound.”
“I’ll come by.”
“Okay.”
Harold arrived quicker than she expected.
Claudia asked him to park in the rear lot and went down to meet him.
“That day you found Zander… you were here too, weren’t you?”
Harold remembered hearing Zander’s voice in the courtyard that afternoon. It hadn’t been his imagination after all.
Claudia nodded. “I was swamped that day, so I brought him along.”

Then he noticed the workers replacing decorative paintings along the hallway. Most were ink wash pieces, giving Southhall Compound an even deeper sense of timeless elegance.
Harold murmured, “People can’t even get a hold of Ludi’s work, and Southhall goes and decks/the whole place out with it.”
Claudia looked up at him. “There’s something I never mentioned.”
“Yeah?” Harold followed her into the elevator.
As soon as the doors closed, he reached for her hand.
Claudia stiffened slightly.
Harold glanced down, waiting.
Her breath caught. She even forgot to press the button for their floor.
Harold nodded toward the panel. “Which floor?”
“Second.”

Then she spoke quietly. “Southhall Compound belonged to my grandfather. It’s under my name now. And… I’m Ludi.”
That Southhall had been Graham’s was surprising enough. But hearing she was Ludi? That hit differently.
Harold had always pictured “Ludi” as some elderly man with a white beard.
“You’re Ludi?”
She nodded.
Harold didn’t know much about her past–most of his years had been spent in the military. It was only after he returned that he’d really begun to know her.
And she’d kept this hidden well. No wonder she’d handed him her own work so casually that day. She’d been right there in front of him the whole time.
“Guess I’m not good enough for you now,” Harold teased lightly.
But Claudia flushed. “No, that’s not it. We’re actually… pretty well matched.”
Harold just held her gaze.
She didn’t know how those words had slipped out. Her cheeks burned.

The elevator stopped on the second floor. She stepped out quickly, Harold following with a quiet laugh.
“Daddy!” Zander darted out and launched himself into Harold’s arms.
Harold lifted him up.
“You behave today? Give your mommy any trouble?”
Zander wrapped his small arms around Harold’s neck and glanced at Claudia. “Zander was good! Mommy’s not mad!”
“Good.” Harold carried him toward the small sofa beside Claudia’s desk. “Tomorrow, your mom and I are taking wedding photos. How about you go stay with Grandma and Grandpa for the day? Roger can take you.”
Claudia sat at her computer, looking slightly uneasy.
“No! Zander wants to stay with Mommy!” Zander insisted, his eyes glued to Claudia. These days, he wanted to be attached to her every second.
Harold didn’t plan to bring him along, though.
He glanced at Claudia.
She noticed.

She’d been right–Harold was absolutely sending Zander home.
To be fair, wedding photos would be hectic. Keeping an eye on a lively kid wouldn’t be easy.
Still, having Zander there might have made things feel less awkward.
Just the two of them alone still felt… unfamiliar.
“Zander, listen to your daddy,” Claudia said softly, meeting Harold’s eyes. “Mommy will bring you back something tasty, okay?”
Zander wriggled out of Harold’s hold and tucked himself into Claudia’s lap. “You’re lying. Last time Daddy said Mommy was busy, and you never came back…”
His eyes reddened.
Harold had told him that before–back when he and Claudia were still strangers. “Be good, and Mommy will come get you when she’s less busy.”
Zander had waited what felt like forever. Now that he finally had her back, he didn’t want to let her out of his sight.
Hearing that, Claudia’s heart sank. She knew why Harold had told that white lie.
And she understood that hollow feeling of waiting for a parent who wasn’t there.

Claudia pulled Zander fully into her arms. “Zander, be good for me, okay? Mommy will call you every night. Mommy and Daddy have something important to do together, and when we finish, we’ll come straight back to you. I’m not lying this time.”
