“Did my brother give you anything totally cheesy?” Henrietta plucked a halfopen tulip and handed it to Claudia. “I hear couples are into that kind of sappy stuff.”

Zander mimicked her, gathering a few flowers of his own nearby.

He went on, “Zander’s my comrade’s son from my Army days. His mom passed away when he was born, grandparents weren’t in the picture, so I took him in under my name. Not many people know. I didn’t bring him home until after I left the service and explained things to the family.”

Harold gave a slow, satisfied nod, exhaling quietly.

“And that thing with Keith–that wasn’t real either. I’d barely spoken to her.”

“I know.” Claudia felt as if a weight had lifted from her chest.

Harold reached for her hand. “Come on, let’s get some dinner.”

She placed her hand in his, and they walked back side by side.

He led her to put the flowers in water. “I heard your mom likes tulips,” Claudia said, admiring them. She liked them too.

“Yeah. You?”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

They fell into a comfortable silence until the housekeeper called from the kitchen that dinner was ready.

Damian stepped out of the elevator holding Isabelle’s hand, both chatting and laughing.

Henrietta–who’d been keeping Zander outside to avoid Harold–finally returned.

Zander made a beeline for Claudia the moment he saw her, arms outstretched.

As Claudia lifted him, he chirped, “Mommy, Auntie said you and Daddy are in love, that you kiss and sleep together. What’s in love‘? I want to be in love with you too.”

Claudia’s cheeks flushed instantly. Why did Henrietta tell a kid things like that?

Harold let out a low chuckle and took Zander from her arms. “I’ve got him.”
