“Claudia, do you know how to drive? I’m not really feeling confident taking my brother’s car out

Claudia glanced down at the keys in her palm. “You actually managed to talk him into handing over his car?”

This was the vehicle Harvey drove most days–smooth, quiet, and seriously luxurious.

She’d never been behind the wheel of anything worth over a million dollars.

“Maybe we should just take mine. If we put a scratch on this, we’ll never hear the end of it.”

Henrietta wasn’t buying it. “Oh come on, I went through all that effort to get the keys. We have to use it. $o what if it gets a little scratched? It’s not your car anyway–you won’t be the one getting chewed out.”

Henrietta pressed the keys into Claudia’s hand and hopped into the passenger seat.

Claudia slid behind the wheel, adjusted the seat, took a moment to familiarize herself with the interior, then carefully started the engine.

Roger followed behind in his own car.

“Dolores is almost here. Let’s meet near the mall entrance,” Henrietta said, clipping her seatbelt into place.

“Is Harvey always this… extra?”

“Huh?” Henrietta chuckled. “He’s generous when it counts, but flashy? Not really. He’s a businessman- everything’s about cost and benefit to him.”

She turned to look at Claudia. “Your name just carries a lot of weight with him, that’s all.”

“Because I helped them out back then?”

Even though Harvey had filled her in on what happened years ago, Claudia still couldn’t recall any of it herself.

Maybe because so much of those memories were gone, the whole story didn’t stir much emotion in her.

“They told you about it?” Henrietta asked carefully. “They specifically said not to bring any of that up around you.”

“Harvey told me. I just don’t remember any of it,” Claudia replied with a soft smile.

“Then don’t worry about it. Just keep looking ahead,” Henrietta said, echoing exactly what Harold had told her once.

“You’re right.”

Henrietta studied her for a second. “But honestly, Claudia, you’re gorgeous. Why didn’t you go for Harvey‘ He’s a great guy! Not like Harold–he’s so tough around the edges. Is he treating you well?”

Henrietta was full of curiosity today. “So… do you like Harold? Like, really like him?”

“Yeah,” Claudia admitted, her face flushing again. “I do.”

“I think he’s really into you, too,” Henrietta said, not the least bit shy about diving into romance talk. “What do you like about him, though? He’s always so grumpy. Most girls are kinda scared to even approach him.”

Harold came off as intense, but he had a gentle side to him.

Just like Isabelle once said–cold on the outside, warm underneath.

“I think he’s wonderful,” Claudia said simply, easing the car into a parking spot.

They both stepped out at the same time.

Henrietta immediately looped her arm through Claudia’s, and they headed toward the mall entrance.

Before they even reached the doors, they spotted Dolores already waiting.

Henrietta waved, and Dolores noticed them right away.

“Henrietta! Claudia!” She looked slightly nervous,

her eyes darting around.

Henrietta pursed her lips, hesitated, then said, “He didn’t come.”

“What? I thought you said he was coming to apologize in person. I even brought a hidden camera.” She’d been ready to record the whole thing.

Harvey, apologizing to someone?

Now that would be a sight.

For a moment that historic, she had to have proof. Then she’d have some leverage to hold over him next time they bargained.

Dolores glanced down at the tiny camera clipped discreetly to her collar. “What do you mean he’s not here?”

“He didn’t come, but he handed over his card. Today, the three of us are going to spend until it maxes out!” Henrietta waved the sleek black card in the air.

Dolores stared at her. “Are you serious right now?”

“Totally! He said if it makes you feel better, he’s willing to do pretty much anything!”

Did Harvey actually agree to that?

Claudia glanced at Henrietta. Was that really how the conversation went?

That didn’t sound like how things were supposed to play out.

Harold was right—Claudia really did need to come along. Otherwise, Henrietta wouldn’t just make things awkward; she might rewrite the whole script.

Claudia stepped in gently. “Dolores, Harvey couldn’t make it today. He wanted to come, but as a guy, he felt awkward apologizing face–to–face, so he asked us to make it up to you. But if you’re still upset after today, he’ll meet with you alone.”

“Really?” Dolores still seemed skeptical.

If Harvey were apologizing, his style would probably be to just Venmo her a few thousand bucks and call it

even.

The fact that Henrietta showed up with his black card today did make it feel somewhat legit.

Henrietta nodded firmly. “Absolutely!”

Dolores finally softened. “Alright, fine.”

Maybe it was better he didn’t come. If he had, Dolores wasn’t sure what she would’ve said to him anyway.
