“Who buys an apology gift with someone else’s money? I just can’t do that,” Dolores said, shaking her head. “I don’t mind letting him treat me to a meal once in a while, but something like this? I should pay for it myself.”
Claudia nodded in agreement and paid for her own gift as well.
Henrietta looked at her curiously. “Why are you paying for yours too?”
“Well, if I’m buying a gift for him with his brother’s money,” Claudia explained, “doesn’t that feel a bit strange? Using his brother’s card to get something for the younger brother?”
“You two are impossible,” Henrietta sighed, feeling like she was arguing with a wall.
After leaving the boutique, Henrietta dragged them into a nearby clothing store.
“I’m using this card today, whether you like it or not!” she insisted, making them try on whatever caught
her eye.
She didn’t really wait to see if they liked the items–she just bought everything she thought looked good.
Claudia and Dolores couldn’t talk her out of it, so they finally gave up and let her enjoy her spree.
Back home, Harvey–wearing comfortable loungewear and in the middle of a video conference–kept feeling his phone vibrate nonstop with one purchase notification after another.
“Not bad…” he murmured to himself.
He adjusted his glasses slightly and continued with his work without another word.
Roger, who had come along to help Henrietta and Claudia, ended up carrying all their shopping bags until his hands were completely full.
Before they realized it, the afternoon had slipped away.
Henrietta guided them to a well–loved fondue spot in town.
“Take this seat,” she said, gently steering Dolores toward the wall–side booth.
Claudia sat down across from them.
“Fondue in the middle of summer?” Dolores muttered quietly. “Your brother certainly has an odd taste in outings.”
At that exact moment, back at home, Harvey sneezed unexpectedly.
He rubbed his nose briefly, then returned to his screen.
Dolores reached for the tablet to order, but Henrietta stopped her. “I already ordered for us. Don’t worry- it’s all stuff that’s good for you.”

“What do you mean, ‘good for me‘? What isn’t good for me?” Dolores couldn’t help but laugh a little.
“Let’s get the food started,” Claudia said to the server who had approached their table.
Just as Dolores was starting to wonder what was going on, a line of servers began entering one by one, each carrying plates filled with nothing but green vegetables—which they set down right in front of her.
Claudia and Henrietta were both watching her closely.
Dolores assumed the meat platters would come after the appetizers, but the table quickly filled up with greens–and only greens.
Then she noticed the two of them staring right at her.
Suddenly, it clicked.
She’d seen enough internet memes to recognize what was happening–she just never thought it would happen to her.
Her heart started beating faster. Could Harvey be messing with her?
But Harvey wasn’t really the joking type.
Then she remembered what he’d been upset about lately. It seemed to have started with that video.
From the first day of the holiday weekend to the last, he’d kept reminding her to watch the footage and write a reflection.
Almost without thinking, she pulled out her phone and opened the video.
It was just over two minutes long. After the first thirty seconds showing the ceremony, the rest was entirely footage of Carson and Jessica.
Dolores‘ expression froze as she stared at the screen.
Henrietta and Claudia didn’t need to look to know she had finally figured it out.
“Don’t panic,” Henrietta said softly. “At least you know now, and it’s early enough that you can still turn things around.”
She actually grew more anxious seeing how calm Dolores appeared.
Claudia poured Dolores a glass of water. “He’s not a good guy. Don’t waste your tears on him–he’s not worth it, and he’s certainly not good enough for you.”
“How long have you both known?” Dolores finally broke down, tears rolling down her cheeks. “Why did you wait until now to tell me…?”
“Harvey said to wait until after Thanksgiving to tell you,” Henrietta replied frankly. “That way you ruin the holiday mood for everyone.”

“How thoughtful of him…” Dolores whispered between sobs.
Henrietta patted her back gently, and Dolores hugged her tightly, crying openly now.
“Jerk…” she kept muttering under her breath.
She hadn’t been crying for long when their meat orders finally arrived.

Dolores was too hungry to stop herself, so she ended up stuffing her face while tears were sull streaming down her cheeks.
Henrietta quietly took Dolores‘ phone, added Harvey back on WhatsApp, and sent him a quick message.
“Mission accomplished. Send the final payment.”
Harvey saw Dolores‘ profile appear again and allowed himself a small smile.
Looked like things were going to be okay.
Henrietta deleted the message thread and handed the phone back. “I figured you might not be able to de yourself, so I already added my brother back.”
Dolores looked at her, eyes still glistening. “Does he want me dead right now?”
Claudia placed a piece of cooked meat on her plate. “If he wanted you dead, he would’ve made you cry before Thanksgiving.”
Dolores fell silent for a long moment.
Harvey had actually been pretty considerate.
She’d misjudged him completely, and now she felt terrible about it,
“What do I do now?” she asked quietly. “I already handed him my resignation letter.”
Claudia offered gently, “He’s probably not even that angry. Just smooth things over with the gift, and I’m sure he’ll take you back.”
“Do you really think that’ll work?” Dolores asked, wiping her eyes.
“It’ll definitely work!” Henrietta chimed in confidently.
“The real issue now is that guy Carson,” Claudia added thoughtfully. “You could ask Harvey for help. If he agrees to step in, then things will really be okay. He has plenty of ways to handle situations like this.
For some reason, Claudia had a feeling Harvey could fix just about anything.
“Exactly.” Henrietta agreed, dropping more food into the simmering pot. “If Harvey didn’t want to get involved, he wouldn’t have asked us to tell you about any of this.”
