Aurora’s POV
We surrounded the oak table. Kovu was right in the middle of everything. It was me, Leon, Hazel, Caspian, Cayden, Lilith, and Alice. It was all seven of us that were standing around. We decided not to add the elders, as we know we could not trust them right now. Or neither can anyone. Who knows? Maybe the demon has taken one of the bodies of the corrupt alphas. We can’t take the risk.
Then Hazel turned to us.
"So what are the couple saying?"
Leon said they had a plan.
"Yes, we do," I said. "The thing is, this cat right here is good at finding. It is not only good at finding stuff. And I believe it can help us sniff out this demon."
And Cayden raised his brows.
"This is a cat. This is a cat. What can a cat do in finding demons?" he questioned, clearly underestimating Kovu.
Then Leon turned to him.
"It was not a cat when we first met it. It was a lion. A very huge lion. Then it turned to a cat on request. Aurora can ask him to turn into anything. And it will. I’m guessing."
"Really? It will turn to me amused—"
"Yes, it was indeed a lion when we first saw it. And then we were going, but we could not take the lion with us, so it transformed into a cat. And since then, it has remained its form. Although, it changes colors very often," I said.
And Hazel looked at it, amused. She tried to touch it, but Caspian held her hand.
"Don’t touch it, dear. You don’t know what kind of energy is behind it," his voice fuelled with caution.
And Leon turned.
"But it is for sure a good energy. It has helped us a couple of times too. I think trusting Kovu is the right choice."
"So how can we let this cat here find demons? How can it happen?" Alice said.
"Demons have once told me that they and Heather share the same blood. If we can perhaps just give it the blood to inhale, it can find demons. No more."
And Leon suddenly turned to me.
"Remember, it has also fought with demons before."
"Yes. Yeah, I’ve forgotten. So it will make it very much easier for him to find demons."
"So we should entrust my daughter’s blood to a cat that transforms to help find the one endangering my daughter’s life?" Cayden asked, trying to make sense of the situation.
"Very much so, Cayden," Leon said.
"Okay, I will only allow that if I see your cat do something. He said it can transform to anything on request. So Aurora, tell it to turn back into a lion," Cayden said.
And then I turned to it.
"Kovu, can you turn into a lion?" I asked.
But Kovu did not say anything. It just purred at me.
Then Cayden sighed.
"It did not turn into a lion. I can’t be sure this is not a spy of one of the demons."
Then Kovu suddenly jumped out from the table. And then a dark form engulfed it.
When the dark form left, it was a very huge lion. Even bigger than its form it was. Everybody took a step back. And it growled at Cayden, ready to pounce.
"Bersa," the lion said.
And then Kovu immediately fell to the ground, slipping.
"Oh my God," the lion said. "This is one of the best sorcery ever. This is not a pet. This is a sorcery. It is one of the sorcery our forefathers have made. From the witches our forefathers have made. My mother used to tell me stories about our ancestors. Before they were witches or even werewolves, they used to perform sorcery. I think this is one of it. Although she told me that many have been destroyed. I fear that Kovu will now slip in."
That explains why it can transform into any animal. Kovu is not naturally a pet. But it is a form of power. I tried to make sense out of it.
And then Cayden turned to his daughter and whispered something in her ear. She nodded. And then went to bring Heather.
By the time she brought Heather back, she placed Heather on the table. I was about to move when Cayden spoke.
"I promise you, if you only take my daughter’s blood for nothing, I will not be very happy with you, sister," Cayden said to me as my heart softened.
He just called me sister. That means he is trusting his daughter’s life with me.
I just took Heather’s hand and poked it a little. And then carried her blood.
And then I turned to Lilith.
"Can you please wake it back up?"
"I can’t be here. I know that I don’t have the best story with this place, but this place needs me the most. I... I can’t," I said as I tightened my hand around Leon. Then I brought Leon’s hand up, our fingers intertwined, and everybody saw it.
Her eyes somehow darkened and she shook her head.
"Please. I’ve lost my sister so many times. Due to love. The first one was between my parents. The second one is between— it’s not going to be between the two of you. No. Please, Aurora, I hope you understand. I... I don’t want to lose you again."
"You’re not going to lose me," I caught her. "Please, sister. Just let us stand together as one forever."
"He is married already."
"The marriage will be cancelled," Hazel said.
"But still, you don’t want to be with a man that leaves his wife just a few days after a wedding. What kind of reputation do we have?"
"People will talk regardless," I said. "People will always have something to say. And that is not our responsibility to care. We are not supposed to care about what people say. I’m sorry, sister. But he is my happiness and he is my joy. And I won’t sacrifice it for anything," I said.
And she swallowed.
"Fine. Good."
And then she turned to Leon.
"I promise you, if anything happens to my sister, you will be at fault," she said.
And Leon nodded.
"I promise that if anything happens to Aurora, I will lose my own life first," he said.
And then I tightened my hold on him.
"To say that," I said, and he smiled.
"Enough with the lovey-dovey over here. So, are we going to be sending the twins to France with my brother over there?"
"I think that’s a bad idea," Lilith finally said something again. "Sending the twins there... what if somebody attacks me on the road?"
"If I’m taken there, no one can attack you. We are going to— I’m going to send wolves with you. And nobody will know. No demons will know," Cayden said.
But she shook her head.
"You are not understanding. Just like Alice said, someone amidst us can be a demon. A demon can be anywhere. A demon can be eavesdropping on us right now. We cannot trust any damn body. I have a bad instinct that I will be attacked on my way to France. So just let the twins be here."
