Chapter 303: Devil 2

*~Aurora’s POV~*

How much of a devil could these people be?

I stayed rigid as Rebecca stared at me. "Hello, bride," she said again, forcing my attention.

I finally turned to her. "What do you want, Rebecca? You’ve won. I’m married to him already."

She nodded calmly. "Yes, you are. Congratulations."

There was something in her eyes as she spoke. Something off. She didn’t look as satisfied as she was supposed to be.

Then her gaze fell to my stomach.

"You’re pregnant now," she said. "Do you remember our promise?"

I frowned. "What promise?"

"If it’s a boy, it’s Azreal," she said smoothly. "But if it’s a girl, it’s Azazel."

I shook my head. "That promise was for if I got pregnant for Darius. This isn’t Darius’s child. This is Leon’s."

Rebecca reached a hand into the carriage, resting it on the edge like she owned the air I breathed. "I don’t care," she said quietly. "I was talking about your baby, not the father."

My throat tightened. "Will my baby be safe?" I asked, hating how small my voice sounded. "Will Darius harm my baby?"

Rebecca sighed and shook her head. "Darius might be a monster... but I don’t think he’ll harm your child. I think he’ll raise that baby as his."

The words hit me like a slap.

"Darius would raise Leon’s child as his own?" I whispered. "Impossible. Absolutely impossible."

Rebecca smiled, the expression cold and certain.

"Oh, yes it’s not."

He would raise that child as if it were his own.

"I know my brother more than anyone," Rebecca said. "He seems to be in love with you."

I turned on her with a glare. "In love with me? That man tortured me. He has made my life a living hell, and you’re standing here talking about him being in love with me?" My eyes watered. "That isn’t love. This is suffering."

My voice cracked. "You people are making me suffer in this household, and I’m sick. I’m tired of it. You married me off without my permission. You treat me like I’m not someone with emotions, with dreams."

I swallowed hard. "Women are women, no matter the creature. And if you are feminine, you’re not supposed to have a dream. Men, no matter the creature as well, will always claim us."

"Then why are you unclaimed?" I snapped, turning to her.

Rebecca shifted her gaze away.

"You should understand," I said bitterly. "Even though you don’t want to be single forever, even though you don’t want to be unclaimed forever, I have someone I love, and I’m carrying his child presently."

"I do not understand," she replied coldly. "What I understand is that I want you married to my brother. Our children should be happy, Aurora."

She started to walk away, but I forced out the courage to grab her attention.

"So this is it?" I asked. "You’re just going to leave and pretend my life isn’t over?"

She glanced back over her shoulder. "It’s not over, Aurora. You are strong, and you will get past anything that comes your way. If there’s something I admire about you, it is your strength, and I will not deny it."

"Prisoners?" I scoffed. "Those are my family, not prisoners," I snapped.

Then he took my hands in his, and before I could react, he placed his fingers on my lips and slowly brushed them.

"You have many more things to worry about on our wedding night," he murmured, "like what I’m going to do to you, not those fifty prisoners."

I slapped his hand away from my mouth.

"Fifty prisoners," I repeated, my chest tight. "Darius, please. You promised me you would release them if I got married to you."

"Oh, fine." He rolled his eyes. "They will be released tomorrow morning, but you do not expect me to leave them in one piece, especially because they broke into the demons’ lounge."

My stomach dropped.

"The decision is not entirely up to me," he continued. "Jared and some other demons, we have a really high seat. But I will fight for their freedom, because if my wife wants it, then what am I not to honour my wife’s request?" He finished with a horrible smile, and I rolled my eyes again.

Then the carriage suddenly stopped, and the clouds darkened.

I silently realized it was what I was thinking, as he and I both stared at each other.

"What’s that?" he asked.

I shook my head. "How am I supposed to know?"

He tightened his grip on my hand. "Do not think about getting down. I’ll go check what’s happening. Do not run away." He leaned closer, terror burning in his eyes as he threatened me. "Because if you do, I promise you, those prisoners under my care and control will bear the pain."

Chills ran down my spine as he stepped out of the carriage.

No one needed to tell me twice to stay. To stay exactly where I was.
