Fated to the Alpha Who Killed Me (by Sherry) novel Chapter 16

Chapter 16

Violet’s POV:

93

Daemon shoved his phone screen into my face. The blue light cut through the dim bedroom, illuminating a PDF attachment with the logo of Evan Thorne’s clinic.

It was an invoice. Six hundred and ten thousand dollars for a Rare Austrian Crystal Sculpture, accompanied by a sarcastic note from Evan about emotional distress.

Well?Daemon’s voice was low and tight. Evan says you walked into his office, smashed his property, and told him to bill me. Is this a joke, Violet? Making a spectacle of yourself in front of my friend?

I didn’t flinch.

It wasn’t a joke,I said calmly. I met his angry red gaze. It was a statement. Evan overstepped, so I corrected him. I simply didn’t feel like absorbing their disrespect anymore.

Daemon stared at me. The compliance he had taken for granted for a decade was gone, replaced by a jagged

edge that seemed to confuse him.

You didn’t feel like it?He took a step closer. You are the Luna of the Frost Pack. You don’t get to have tantrums because you don’t feel likebeing polite. You represent me.

I am not a show dog, Daemon,I snapped, standing up to face him. I have spent five years curating every breath to fit the mold you and your parents built. I was a domesticated pet. But I’m tired, Daemon, I just

don’t want to act anymore.

The silence was deafening. He looked at me with a mixture of cold fury and genuine alienation. It was as if

he had come home to find a stranger.

If you found it so unbearable,he whispered, his voice icy, why didn’t you leave sooner? You played the devoted wife for five years. Now, suddenly, you’re exhausted?

The timing of my resignation is my prerogative,I retorted. I can quit whenever I want.

He scoffed. You think you can push me and there won’t be consequences.

I’m counting on the consequences.

Daemon stared at me, his jaw working. He looked like he wanted to shake me, to force the old Violet back to the surface, but the resolution in my eyes stopped him. With a growl of frustration, he spun around and stormed out, slamming the heavy oak door behind him.

I sank onto the bed. My heart hammered against my ribs, but beneath the adrenaline, I felt only the terrifying relief of finally tearing off the mask.

The following afternoon, I sat in my car across from the McDonald’s near the university. Through the glass

windows, I saw her.

Celeste Morrison.

She was wiping down a table, moving with an energy that seemed to draw the light. She laughed at something a coworker said, her smile genuine.

I checked the date. The Lupine Sovereign University Centennial Celebration was in fortyeight hours. That was the day Daemon would meet her. The day he would smell her.

I shouldn’t have gone in. I should have driven away. But a desperate part of me wanted to try one last time

to derail the train.

I entered the restaurant. Celeste looked up, her eyes widening.

Luna!She beamed.

I was in the neighborhood. Actually, Celeste, I was wonderingI have a few tickets to a private charity gala on Friday night. It’s going to be quite an event. I thought maybe you and a friend might want to

come?

If she came to the gala, she wouldn’t be at the Centennial. If she wasn’t at the Centennial, Daemon wouldn’t

meet her yet.

Celeste’s face fell. Oh, wow, that sounds amazing! Thank you so much for asking. ButI can’t. I’m a student volunteer for the University Centennial this Friday. I was selected as one of the lead ushers. It’s a

onceinalifetime celebration I just can’t miss being part of history.

The refusal was polite, reasonable, and absolute.

I stared at her, feeling the cold weight of inevitability. The universe had scripted this.

I understand,I said, my voice hollow.

Because Daemon’s parents were staying at the manor, we had to maintain appearances. That meant sleeping

in the same room.

The Kingsized bed felt miles wide. Daemon lay on the far left, breathing deeply but clearly awake. I lay on the far right, staring at the ceiling. There was enough space between us to fit another personwhich was appropriate, considering another person was about to enter our lives.
