Verity:
"That is something to be considered," Ragnar remarked, his hands still tucked into his pants pockets.
I didn’t know why, but they made me uncomfortable.
I wasn’t used to seeing him like that, so I kept glancing at his hands.
My gaze drifted to his pockets before I looked away awkwardly.
"You seem to observe a lot."
As soon as he said that, I felt as though he could read my mind.
I tried to silence my thoughts at any cost from then on.
"I really don’t," I replied with an awkward smile, trying to fool the Alpha King, who possibly knew everything.
Not everything.
If he did, he wouldn’t have blamed my brother for Gigi’s lies.
"You must miss your brother," he observed, making me wonder once again if he really could read my mind.
I looked at him for a moment before turning my gaze toward the darkness.
Then I smiled to myself.
"I’m in a position where I can’t even admit that I do, because then I’d be seen as someone siding with an abuser."
It killed me to say that.
"Well, let’s say no one was judging you. What would your answer be?" he prompted.
My eyes settled on one of the lit houses in the distance, bringing a weary smile to my lips.
It was a smile I knew well, one I used to wear when Justin was with me.
"You know, we were on our own before we were even teenagers," I recalled, the corners of my eyes stinging with tears.
"Justin took responsibility for me, and he did it well."
"He worked nonstop for me, and I would just sit at home, thinking about all the ways I’d repay him when I grew up."
I paused, sniffling back a tear.
"I didn’t know when things had turned sour between him and—,"
I stopped, realizing I had grown too comfortable talking about Justin and the past.
So comfortable that I was about to talk about my brother’s relationship with his girlfriend in front of Ragnar.
"Keep going," he urged.
He turned to lean lightly against the railing, angling himself so he could see my face, probably even read it clearly.
"They were adorable together. I mean, Gigi demanded all of his attention, and Justin— well, he carried a huge burden on his shoulders."
I laughed as I remembered it.
I remembered how everyone used to call me the burden on his shoulders.
"Then, one day, it was suddenly revealed that my brother had been abusing Gigi. I’m not sure what turned sour between them," I paused, my lips beginning to quiver.
After a certain point, I couldn’t even share my tears with anyone because, well, the man standing in front of me was the reason things had turned sour between them.
Because this man had an affair with a woman who was already in a relationship and pregnant.
"Anyway. Needless to say, I do remember my brother. But then I remember what he did, and I get so angry that I blame myself for still missing someone who had done something so horrible to a woman."
Those words didn’t mean anything.
They were nothing more than lies meant to hide the fact that I was thinking about revenge.
Ragnar remained silent.
