Verity:
I was slightly confused because I stayed with Roman for several minutes, yet nobody came inside.
After catching that first glimpse of the shadow, I had expected Ragnar to show up.
I mean, I had left a file in his car.
But he didn’t.
The shadow disappeared, and I realised why.
Of course.
It was Ragnar.
He didn’t fucking care.
He had left me in pain the other day like it meant nothing to him.
Why would he fucking show up now?
He had probably come, seen that I was talking to my abusive boyfriend, and decided to mind his own business and let us deal with it.
I’m sure that’s what happened.
"Anyway, I only came here to fix things between us. Look, as your boyfriend, I take full responsibility for my actions and behaviour. I wanted to come sooner and make things right because I know how sensitive women can be. I didn’t want you to think I was going to treat you like this every day, but unfortunately, you had to go on a trip with that fucking Alpha King."
Roman spoke harshly as he sat on the couch after asking me to make him a coffee, in a tone that left no room for refusal.
I had come home exhausted.
If he had been enough of a gentleman, he would have made coffee for me.
But no.
I didn’t argue because I knew exactly what this man was fucking capable of.
"Yeah, it was an important trip," I replied from the kitchen.
"Did you happen to come across the monster? The one you two were investigating?" he called from the living room, turning the television’s volume up so loud that it seemed as though he didn’t even want to hear the answer.
I had to raise my voice just to be heard.
"We actually came across it. It attacked me and everyone else," I answered. "We even lost our driver in its brutal attack."
I went back to making the coffee when he suddenly appeared beside me, making my heart skip a beat.
"Is that Alpha King fucking insane?" Roman snapped, looking genuinely bothered. "He’s dragging you, a wolfeless woman, into the most dangerous parts of the woods. What the fuck was he even thinking?"
His jaw tightened, and his fists clenched.
Who did he think he was, questioning an Alpha King?
I didn’t say anything.
I knew he was only trying to sound intimidating.
"Verity, you don’t have a wolf. All you have is this body. Don’t get me wrong," Roman continued, exposing more of his twisted views.
I always let him talk because the more he spoke, the more he revealed about himself.
"You aren’t even supposed to be in a position like this, working as a secretary for Alpha King. You’re just a pretty face with a sexy body. I don’t want to offend you, but women like you usually get jobs because they’re easy on the eyes."
Roman clicked his tongue, making me smile despite the pain his words caused.
I wasn’t that stupid.
