Jaguar:
"It’s Theodore. At first, I was trying to figure out where he’d disappeared to. Then I found out he’d gone over to Gigi’s for movie night."
I paused when Verity tilted her head strangely, as if she were suddenly paying very close attention.
"Then, when I talked to Gigi, she seemed a little upset, so I’m going over there to cheer her up and get her to talk to me."
I said it casually, but I could tell Verity wasn’t impressed.
All the playfulness had disappeared from her face.
"What happened?" I asked, a little concerned.
"Have you seen the time? It’s past 11 p.m. What exactly do you want to talk about with your brother’s fiancée at this hour? I mean, I know you’re friends and everything, but don’t you think it’s a little strange? If she’s upset, do you really need to go comfort her in the middle of the night?"
The way she said it was almost innocent. Her tone was normal too.
I just didn’t like what she was saying.
"Verity, what are you even talking about? Gigi is just as dear to me as she is to my brother. Fine, our relationships with her are different, but I care about her. And sometimes a person doesn’t need a lover. They need a friend. That’s why I’m going."
I spoke firmly, wanting to establish a clear boundary with Verity from the beginning.
Yes, I liked her a lot, and I wanted to bring her into my home someday, but that didn’t mean she could come in and start changing the dynamics of my relationships.
"I’m just saying it because it seems inappropriate. And it’s not only you. You just told me Theodore is there too, while her fiancé is the only one who isn’t."
This time, Verity’s words came out much harsher.
All the softness had disappeared from her voice.
"Verity, what has gotten into you? Since when did you start thinking so narrowly? You’re a modern woman. Besides, I don’t want to have a discussion about the dynamic between Gigi and me. You’ll have to respect that boundary."
I didn’t know what came over me.
I had gotten a little rude with her.
Maybe Gigi’s voice was still stuck in my head.
I had no idea what she was going through, and somewhere in the back of my mind, I also felt that Verity of all people should understand.
Her own brother had already hurt Gigi, and now she was trying to stop me from going to her too.
It felt unfair.
"Anyway, we’ll talk tomorrow."
After that, I didn’t say anything else or continue the discussion.
I simply turned around and left the kitchen.
But one thing was certain, Verity had disappointed me deeply.
I never could have imagined that she thought this way.
Still, I got into my car and drove straight to Gigi’s house.
The moment I arrived and stepped inside the mansion, I realized coming here had been the right decision, no matter how inappropriate Verity thought the timing was.
All I could hear was Gigi crying.
Her wailing was so loud that it made my heart drop.
The house was completely empty and dark, so I started making my way through the darkness, following the sound.
More importantly, I couldn’t even believe it was possible.
There was no way.
No way.
"That can’t be true," I said as I pulled away from the hug with Gigi.
"Who told you that?" I asked her, gently touching her cheek.
She turned to Theodore and then took his hand.
I noticed Theodore’s features soften, as if a huge weight had been lifted off his chest.
"I’m telling both of you, it’s true. I figured it out from the things he’s been saying. He doesn’t even spend much time with me anymore," Gigi complained, making Theodore and me exchange a glance before looking back at her.
"You must have gotten the wrong idea," Theodore said, reaching over to wipe away her tear, but he stopped himself before touching her.
I gave him a questioning look, but he shook his head.
So I wiped the tear away for her instead.
"I’m telling you, there has to be someone. I’m just not sure, and I don’t want to ask him because it might upset him. Because what if there is no one? What if I’m just losing my mind?" Gigi cried before adding softly, "And you already know the doctor said that he had found his mate. Do you think he didn’t feel the mate bond with her? He did. He just didn’t tell anyone. He didn’t even tell me who it was."
She reminded me of that incident at the hospital.
Both Theodore and I understood what she was talking about.
Her concern was genuine.
So I promised her that I would find out what was going on and whether he was indeed spending time with someone else.
