Theodore:
I had already given Verity the good news.
Now all we had to do was freshen up, meet up, and talk to my brothers about her.
I had already decided that I would convince them somehow.
I mean, Jaguar would be easy. I was pretty sure he wouldn’t care much.
Ragnar was the problem.
But with the way things had been going, I was starting to believe even Ragnar wouldn’t have much of an issue with it.
After all, Gigi was a victim too, wasn’t she?
Whether anyone wanted to admit it or not, Verity had been wronged as well.
She had been brutally punished for her brother’s mistakes.
That gave me hope.
Once I was ready, I left my room to go talk to my brothers.
That was when Verity started calling me.
I smiled, imagining her getting impatient.
Of course she was anxiously waiting. Maybe I shouldn’t have told her anything beforehand.
"Hello? Can you wait a little? We haven’t even sat down yet," I answered with a quiet laugh.
But the heavy breathing on the other end immediately caught my attention.
"Verity? Are you okay?" I asked, slowing my steps.
Jaguar appeared down the hall, frowning at me.
"Where are you going? Come on. Ragnar’s waiting for us," he called.
I gestured for him to wait. Jaguar didn’t even know what we were supposed to be discussing yet.
Then Verity finally spoke.
"My body... it’s in pain."
Goosebumps rose across my skin.
My eyes immediately met Jaguar’s, and he must have seen something in my expression because his face changed too.
"It’s Verity. I think she’s having a transition again."
That was all I had to say.
Before I could even start running, Jaguar took off ahead of me.
I wasn’t far behind.
By the time I reached Verity’s wing, he had already rushed into her room.
When I entered, I found Verity sitting near the edge of the bed, clutching her chest with both hands and crying out in pain.
"This pain... it’s so weird," she breathed, her voice shaky and strained.
My chest tightened at the sound of her. It was almost as if I could feel her pain myself.
"What is happening to her? Why does she keep getting these pains without transitioning?" I asked, looking at Jaguar.
He took Verity’s hand and helped her up.
"We need to get her into something cold." He stopped abruptly and touched her. "Wait. Her body isn’t hot yet."
He immediately abandoned the idea of putting her in cold water.
"It’s weird. It’s a different kind of pain this time," Verity complained.
"Okay, then what do we do? Should we take her to the woods and see if she can transition there?" I asked.
Jaguar shrugged, but then his head suddenly turned toward the doorway and his entire posture stiffened.
I followed his gaze.
Ragnar stood there.
He must have seen us rushing down the hall and followed us.
"What happened?" Ragnar asked in the driest tone imaginable.
"I think she might transition," I explained.
Ragnar walked over and silently studied Verity for a moment.
