**A world without her.**
Kael.
As I stirred from sleep, an excruciating headache throbbed insistently at the back of my skull, a relentless drumbeat that threatened to split my head in two. Yet, paradoxically, I felt as though I had just emerged from the most rejuvenating slumber imaginable. There was an exhilarating lightness coursing through me, a sensation that my wolf was wide awake, and even the remnants of my previous discomfort had dulled to a mere whisper. But the most intoxicating part of this awakening was the unmistakable scent of Leilani—her fragrance enveloped me like a warm embrace. It was everywhere, saturating the very air around me.
She was in my mind, woven into the sheets, lingering on my pillow…
Even on the shirt I was wearing—
Hold on, that’s not my shirt!
My eyes shot open wide as I bolted upright, and the suddenness of my movement sent my vision into a brief whirl before it settled back into focus.
A frown creased my brow as the reality of my surroundings hit me like a cold splash of water. Goddess, I wasn’t even in my own home! My shoes were nowhere to be found, and I was clad in this strange shirt that reeked of Leilani’s essence.
What the actual hell?
My mind raced as I tossed the covers aside, the images of last night crashing down on me like a tidal wave. The heat rushed to my cheeks as I recalled the kiss Leilani and I had shared; it played on a loop in my mind, a vivid reel that refused to fade.
Warmth enveloped my cheeks, and an unexpected wave of embarrassment coursed through me. Here I was, Kael Stormborn, the formidable Alpha, blushing at the mere thought of Leilani.
How in the world is this even happening?
Frantically, I scanned the room for my shirt, but it was nowhere in sight. A deep sense of frustration bubbled within me. I couldn’t possibly leave this room like this—not when the heavens themselves knew I couldn’t face her, not while wearing this shirt that clearly belonged to her.
A tiny, nagging voice in the back of my mind tried to remind me that she must have been the one to dress me, but even with that knowledge, I felt rooted to the spot. The burning heat on my cheeks only intensified.
“I have to get out of here! This girl is in my head… I need to—”
My frantic thoughts were abruptly interrupted when I spotted a small piece of paper resting on the bedside table, held down by a bottle of sparkling water, with a bottle of painkillers sitting nearby.
I paused, my eyes widening in disbelief. “She left me drugs?”
Tentatively, I approached the table, half-expecting it to explode, and after gingerly picking up the note and placing the bottle of water back down, I began to read in silence. The note read:
“By the time you wake up, I’ll be at work, so I’m leaving these instructions for you for easy navigation around the house. Your shirt’s downstairs in the laundry—which is the first door to your left after the kitchen. It reeked, so I had to change you into something cleaner. There’s a bottle of painkillers for your hangover, and your shoes are also downstairs by the door. I made you breakfast. It’s at the table.
P.S.: Leave as soon as you’ve eaten, and if you decide not to eat, that’s just fine as well.”
I froze, utterly taken aback.
Of all the things I had anticipated finding, this was the absolute last thing on my mind.
With the knowledge that she was no longer in the house, I quietly slipped out of the room and made my way downstairs. To my surprise, everything was exactly as she had described in her note.
Normally, I would skip breakfast without a second thought, but today was different. I felt an inexplicable urge to eat the meal she had prepared for me, simply because it was hers. With that thought driving me, I approached the dining table, lifted the covers off the dishes, and gasped at the sight before me.
But was it truly worth it?
Was this sudden, irrational obsession with Leilani worth sacrificing everything I had?
My grip tightened around the steering wheel as I wrestled with these thoughts. Just as I approached a curve, a deafening horn blared, snapping me back to reality.
I turned sharply towards the sound, my heart racing as I caught sight of a massive truck barreling towards me. I had seen it far too late; there was no escaping the impending disaster.
I squeezed my eyes shut, and in that moment of desperation, it wasn’t Chalice’s face that filled my mind. It was Leilani’s, her radiant smile illuminating my thoughts as I felt the first impact of the crash.
Boom!!
My world spun violently. Glass shattered, slicing into my skin, and I groaned in agony as pain radiated through my body. My car veered off the road, tumbling down a steep hill, but strangely, I felt no fear of death. My only terror was the thought that I might never see Leilani again.
I feared I would never earn her forgiveness.
I dreaded the idea that I would never again feel her skin against mine.
In that chaotic moment, the heated kiss we had shared last night flashed vividly in my mind before everything fell silent.
The ringing in my ears faded. The pain in my body vanished, and I plummeted into the abyss that beckoned me.
The abyss that was devoid of Leilani.
“I don’t want to live in a world that doesn’t have you in it…” My words from last night echoed hauntingly in my mind, and I sighed, filled with an unbearable irony.
