Leilani.
Maya and I returned into the house, that is after receiving our takeout from the delivery lady who arrived two exactly minutes after Gavin left; but by the time we returned to the movie, I wasn’t feeling it anymore.
I couldn’t stop thinking about Gavin and the words he’d said to me, and I certainly couldn’t stop thinking about that hug. It was the first hug we had ever shared in over ten years, and now, it felt weird to think that he would even wrap his arms around my body… that he could ever treat me like I was part of his family.
The corners of my eyes burned with tears but instead of making them fall, I buried my face into a bowl of hot spicy ramen. The heat from the food made my eyes water, and this time, when

tears streamed down my face, I didn’t bother questioning if I was crying because I felt bad or because the food was too spicy.
After devouring our food and eating some
desserts in order to restore order to our taste buds, I picked up my phone and called Jarek.
He picked up on the first ring, his deep rich voice vibrating through the phone as he drawled; “Hello Sweetcakes.”
“Hey,” I called back, trying desperately and failing to sound unbothered. “I wanted to ask you for something.”
“What is it?”
From the other end of the phone, I heard ruffling sounds and I didn’t need any soothsayer to know that he was moving around. I said; “I wanted to ask if you still have my old phone.”
“What phon-” he began to say, but as if suddenly

remembering about it, he sighed and added; “I think I still do. It should be somewhere in my safe. Is there a problem?”
“Yes, I need it. I want to check for some
important messages in it.” I answered, and I heard him let out a breath on the other end before he responded quietly;
“Okay then, I’ll be there in a few minutes.”
Huh?
“Wait—” I began to say but before I could finish, the call had disconnected and I was left
screaming at my phone instead.
It wasn’t until that moment that I turned to look
at Maya, and goddess, I hated how downcast she looked. I hated that she was sad… bothered even,
and it hurt to know that she was like this because
of me.
I let my phone drop to the side and walked over

to her, and as soon as I reached her, I wrapped my arms around her body and whispered; “I am sorry.”
“You know you shouldn’t be sorry, right?” She answered lightly. “If anyone’s supposed to be sorry then it’s him, your godforsaken parents, and your stupid bratty sister who was the architect of everything to begin with.”
At her words, I shook my head carefully and muttered; “Chalice may have been a villain but my parents are the real architects behind all my misfortunes.”
I then went ahead to tell her about Jay’s suspicions, and by the time I was done, she shook her head and said; “If you and Chalice weren’t splitting images of each other, I would’ve sworn that you do not belong to that family.”
“I don’t think I belong to that family.” I answered truthfully. “I don’t know what the deal with

Chalice is and why we look so alike, but a real
family would never do what they’ve done to me. A real family will not make you weak and curse you for being weak.”
Maya hummed.
“It almost sounds like a Klaus Mikaelsom scenario.” She mused under her breath and I
rolled my eyes at her before rising to pour us some juice.
“No, but for real!” She continued with conviction. “In the movie, his mother made him weak in order to hide who he was and the fact that she had cheated on her husband with a wolf! So now, what if just like him, you’re stronger than your siblings? What if they know how powerful your wolf is and have decided to weaken you first to stop it from manifesting?” She asked, and again I rolled my eyes because I trust Maya to have her
head buried in stack and stack of fictitious
movies.

She groaned; “Urghh! I know you’ll never believe me, but what if?” She asked again, and this time, I slowly turned around to pin her with glare as I said seriously;
“Then I’ll have to dagger them all just like he does, and have their bodies stashed into coffins for a very long time.”
She laughed.
But I didn’t, because I was serious. I really would.
The next day, Maya and I met Gavin at an upscale restaurant where he sat by a corner, reading a magazine. He stood up as soon as he noticed us walking over and smiled politely before
muttering; “Leilani, Maya… good to see you both. How did you sleep?”

I didn’t answer directly and simply nodded, while Maya chirped in; “Not so well.”

At that, he turned to look at her and I couldn’t help but notice the adoration in his eyes, or how he couldn’t seem to take them off her for a very long moment. A small smile painted across his face when she winced while sitting down, and in that moment, I knew… I knew that despite me being the bone of contention between both of them now, that they would still find their way together in the end.
They were the first pair of mates that I have seen that seemed to share a mutual connection. And as for everyone else I knew, they were simply pawns being played with by the moon goddess- people she’d paired together while half asleep.
I fished out the phone from my pocket and turned it on, frowning when the old screen lit up slowly. I then inputted my password into it and passed it to him where I watched him scroll through the messages until he stopped at the ones he was looking for.

The table was as quiet as a graveyard as he soon began to take pictures of the texts, and when he was done, he typed in the number into his phone, saved it and passed the phone back to me.
He smiled; “I’ll check it out tonight.”
“I will too.” I answered coldly and he nodded.
Seeing that I had nothing left to say to him, I made to leave but stopped when his voice suddenly rang out. He seethed; “I know I shouldn’t have done it but I also checked through your old chats with Chalice… and again, I feel like such a fool for allowing her to deceive me for so long.”
“Gavin, we’ve talked about this before.”
“I know we have.” He answered stubbornly, “but seeing it again, with my own eyes… I couldn’t help but speak out. And I also want to say sorry for sending you those messages too. I used to think that you were very difficult, and that is my

biggest regret.”
Hearing him speak, I couldn’t bring myself to respond so I nodded. I then turned to Maya and said; “I want to take a walk. Alone.”
I didn’t want to.
I just wanted to be out of here…
